  • Ear Candling: Yay! or Nay?

According to the Cdn gov't, ear candling is dangerous and unnecessary. But every person I've personally spoken with who has had it done gives rave reviews and highly recommends this procedure. I've never had it done but I kind of want to. I know this is a squeemish topic for some, but I'm just wondering if any of you have confirmation for either side of this debate.

EDIT: I'll soon stop posting random threads and will disappear again for five months.

every person here wants to know what the hell ear candling is, and if it involves putting wax in your ears, count me out.

      heh.

basically you stick a special candle in your ear, and light the thing, and it sucks all the wax out ur ear. or something like that. i never tried it either, but same thing homegirl said, everyone i ever talked to who's done it says it's amazing shit and it works.

When I was younger I thought I went deaf in one ear, but it turns out it was just really plugged with wax. To remove it, the doctor used a water pick thing and it hurt like fk. I don't have wax build up problems anymore, but if I did, ear candeling sounds like a nice alternative to blasting it out with water.

I'm getting older, and since I get a little wax build up these days, I find the best stuff is medication. I've tried ear candling, and it hasn't quite worked for me. If you're really having troubles with ear wax, get the drops, you drop like 10 in, wait a minute or two lying on your side, and suddenly you'll hear all the wax in your ear start to dissolve, it's fun shit.... and then go over to your spouse's pillow and tilt your head to the other side to let it all come out... it never gets old my friends... never gets old.

Does it feel like that feeling in your ears when they clear after you have been swimming?

My cousins told me about their experience having that done by their MD. They said it was pretty painful. Did it actually work for you?

The real reason I even started considering ear candling is because of the personal stories people have shared with me re: how much of an added boost it offers them in terms of comfort. Especially musicians. When I think about it, I'd rather run the risk of wax going down my ear than some sort of mildly corrosive acid. But meh, I won't do anything until I can convince a real doctor to do it. Apparently deaf people have this done all_the_time.

Lovely story of happy matrimony Paul. Keep 'em coming!

yea well...i'd think having clear ears would run more risk of damage than having a lil wax padding for the drums. but i have no idea what the medical difference is.

It worked, it just hurt alot. It wasn't just waxy buildup on the sides, it merged into a big earplug, so the water pick had to get the part that was sticking to the sides to free it. I have mild tenitus (sp) in that ear now :/

You can poke the ear wax out with a cotton swab.
