This is a tough question. I, like many other people on here, listen to all kinds of music. Unfortunately I'm not quite as learned as the rest of you in all these different types of metal. On the reccomendation of Touflo, though, I downloaded some Helloween the other day and liked it. Still I have to say that I look for something melodic that exhibits some musical talent (ie good guitars, vocals, drumming, and in some cases I'll listen to a band because of their bassist). Enough of this bullshit I'll just put some of the random bands I like:

    Led Zeppelin
    Radiohead
    Outkast
    Tool
    Phish
    Coldplay
    Miles Davis
    Emmylou Harris
    Hot Water Music
    At the Drive-In
    Bob Marley
    Moe.
    The String Cheese Incident
    The Mars Volta
    The Who
    Eric Clapton
    The Get Up Kids
    Saves the Day
    NWA
    Beastie Boys
    Jurassic 5

Bob, you should download some Blind Guardian, they are quite melodic, and have really good guitar parts.

In my music, it's usually the lyrics that I listen for, I'm just weird like that though. Hence why I listen to the bands that I do, like Pink Floyd, APC, Tool, The Metric, Smashing Pumpkins, and a lot of other bands.. I also like Jazz and some classical music though too.. and I really like acoustic music..

I listen to ev'rything, any organized sounds can be consider'd music, it helps me learn and understand more about different styles of music, from the basic tones to different combinations of timbre.

I do tend to listen to more oldies musical showtunes and hip hop, mainly because the first one is where you can find pop-jazz, with lil syncopation, and the second one reflects a lot of culture, depending on their instrumentations.

Right now I'm really into Wilco. For me it's the perfect band when you have holidays and just wanna sit outside with a few friends in the nice warm sun, while enjoying a cold beer/drink and playing some cards. :]

(I need some more bands like Wilco though, but if they're 'too' country I probably won't like em.)

Give me anything that isn't tainted by the worthless pop-culture sound that MTV has embedded into every "me too" pop-punk band out there. As previously mentioned in another thread, Iced Earth, Meshuggah, and other similar bands do it for me; however, at times I'll kick back with some Pink Floyd, Wumpscut.. hell, I'll even take some old-school Beastie Boys once in a while. I don't like the MTV scene. I don't like the country scene. Other than that, bring it on.

I like Fugazi. They are politically aware, which is always good in MY opinion (NOTE: might not be you're opinion..so stfu), they bring emotion to music, and they don't yell that much..

You can't get any more melodic than trance; from synths to bells to pianos... and since normally the melodies are pretty obvious it's easy listening and catchy.
                            Captain Techno at it again.

I hope you understand that for others electric guitars and angst aren't turnoffs, but the opposite. MTV sucks, I'll give you that. Screaming, meh depends on how it's down. I'm not a big screamo or whatever the hell you want to call it. If it accompanys good singing and is more in the background, I think it can sound alright.

Lyrically, I do listen very closely to what the singer is saying. Add good talented musicianship to that and I'm a happy man. I guess I just have to get into the song to like it.

By the way Bob...I usually agree with you, but most of what Boys Night Out plays is garbage. I have a few of their songs downloaded, but when it comes up on my playlist I hit the skip button as quick as I can. A Torrid Love Affair is decent. That's it.

To those who care, I found out Anatomy of a Ghost broke up and 2 people from The Beautiful Mistake left, but they're sticking it out. I was looking forward to seeing AoaG this summer, won't be happening now.

I think the extent of my summer tour seeing is Warped Tour and I'll be able to see these BANDS. Still sucks that Good Charlotte and New Found Glory will be there, although the rest of the lineup is solid.
The song doesn't make your hands clap,
The hand claps make the song
