If the bands I deleted because I've never heard of them are as horridly shitty as the three I left in the quote (although the Stone Roses and Bad Religion are good), I definitely don't blame him for listening to REM, because REM is actually a good band (or at least was a good band at some point).

If you like REM, try The Tragically Hip. There's a similar sound, both in the vocals and some of the guitar work, but with folksy Canadian themes and more of a blues-based background.
