I think we might have had a misunderstanding, GoldenPlums. Most of my post was directed towards responding to Bilbo's question, not at refuting your post, of which most of your points I agree with.

At one point Britain's empire covered more than a quarter of the land in the world. - But we were nice and gave most of it back

I would say that is a very strong reason for it being so popular...
And plus we took it to america which is so huge...
Might have something to do with the indutrial revolution too... we were the first country to start using metals as a main building tool i think , lol i can't say i know much on the subject cause history sucked big time in school...

This is interesting, because I remember to have learned that New Amsterdam was traded for Suriname. So I googled a bit:

        Source 1:
        http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/travel/king...lonization.htm
The Dutch lost New Netherland to the English during the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1664 only a few years after the establishment of Wiltwyck.
According to this, you were right.

        Source 2:
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Amsterdam
In the Second Anglo-Dutch War, between England and the United Netherlands, the New Netherlands were seized by the English, with director general Peter Stuyvesant surrendering New Amsterdam on September 24, 1664. Part of the settlement included an exhange with the tiny, nutmeg rich, island of Run in North Maluku. The colony was subsequently renamed New York, after the Duke of York—brother of the English King Charles II—who had been granted the lands.

In 1667, the Dutch withdrew their claims on the colony in the Treaty of Breda, and were granted the rights to Suriname in return. However, in a subsequent war between the English and the Dutch, the Dutch recaptured the colony briefly in 1673 before handing it over for good after the signing of the Treaty of Westminster on February 19, 1674.
So, initially, New Amsterdam was lost to England in a war. But a few years later the Netherlands received Suriname back for it.

I did wonder, as I didn't really disagree with your's

"In 1652 Admiral Martin Tromp, then commander of the Dutch fleet ordered forty ships not to salute the English. In response Robert Blake (whom some regard as the greatest British admiral), opened fire."
