you can shout whatever ya want and do fancy "wax on wax off"-tricks, but after a shinkick in ya liver/head followed by an elboy on your jaw the only sound you'll make is "ouchhhhh" :P

Rion,
For what purpose do you want to learn it?
Have you figured out what you want to do? defence, attacking, weapons, etc?
Basicly you have to figure that out. Gain some information about different MMA (mixed martial arts) / K1 to see what suits best to you. Again, look on sherdog.com it has great information. (just search in the forum on some smart keywords).
Let me know what you want to learn and i can help ya further. if you're interested in muay thai, downloa...err.. buy the new movie "ong bak". it has some nice movements of muay thai.

I've studied karate for 12 years now and in my opinion it's the best way to go as far as learning an actual martial art. It's not about how fancy something looks or impressing someone through a sparring match, it's about self preservation in all respects and teaches you how to be technically sound. Another added bonus is that the workouts are great excersize. Also. I cannot even speak of how it's helped me with other things such as respect and confidence, although im sure other styles teach that as well but I'm biased towards karate because I've trained so long.
If you can understand this, the underlying philosophy for my style of karate is: You learn it so you don't have to use it.

Depends on what you want and what are your physical stats.
I assume you want to learn something that you can use on the street.
non-sport Karate/Muay Thai/Kickboxing are nice, but since its force vs force, you need to have very good physical shape to effectively fight against a bigger opponent using those, the good thing is that their training routine will make you physically tougher if you're not a slacker.
``Use your opponent's strength against himself`` styles are often crap, sadly - well, perhaps because of guys who go to learn such styles are often frail and thinking they will be able to win fights without having actual strength, which is a silly thing to think. ( Unless they teach you to fight with simple things available in real life like knives, short sticks - try Arnis Kali Escrima if its available in your area for weapon combat, its great! ).
Aikido guys who can really fight have some other contact style experience (boxing/karate). If u dont have anything behind your shoulders and you go to Aikido, probably all fighting will remain in theory =).
Wing Chung is Wu Shu (a.k.a one of the styles of chinese martial arts, they are a horde), and Wu Shu is a very shady area. I'd go look at their training, if guys who train there are buff and there are contact sparrings(i mean real sparrings when people get bruises on hits, not `touch your male partner and try to do it in non homosexual manner` sparring), then perhaps its nice.
If they start teaching you about Chi instead of teaching you how to fight, drop it - not that breath and energy control are useless - they are not, but they should come secondary if you want to make someone physically tougher than you drop.
Tae Kwon Do is sports, hell that Thai Bo thing derived from it =X, i bet there are some TKD guys who can fight good but different people have different talents and if a guy has prowess for martial arts, in any case he'd do better on the street if he'd learn a style not for sport competition but for beating up physically superior/multiple opponents. ( on the street you will rarely meet a guy who is phys. weaker than u, alone, and willing to fight you, now a bunch of drunk blue collar workers is a more realistic example )
That is all :fear:
1:Eeks> well that bichix was trying to start conversation with me today

1:Eeks> but i didn't propose anything

you still havent really cleared out what you want to use it for.
streetdefence, body workout, etc. it really depends on that.
In both cases meantiont above, that sport isn't suit cause i can promise you when someone starts a fight in a pub with ya, the last thing you remember to do is "wax on, wax off". It will come down to a mather of seconds, so taking or blocking the hit and return with some combinations.
perhaps try work on your condition, so if your in a fight you can run faster than your opponement :P
