TKD has more artistic appeal. It's a balance really, the more artistic, the less actual fighting. See what kind of balance you prefer and that'll make you choose the right martial art.

I still stand by my initial opinion in that karate would be best for you however some of the other points that have been brought up are definately worth your consideration and I'm not saying anything against any other kinds of martial arts.

As much as some people may believe that karate or martial arts in general is just about the way it looks or the sport aspect of it I would place my money on the martial artist over the street fighter any day of the week.

Something else that caught my attention was that someone said it's all about force vs force, which I don't agree with. It doesn't matter how much bigger an opponent is brains wins out every time because knowing what to do and how to react is the key to self defence.

So I was thinking about taking a martial art up. Good!
          Aikido, Good!
Take your Do Um, Bad, unless you just want to pay your money, put in your time, and get a shinny blackbelt. (speaking generaly, not slamming all TKD schools)

Useless trivia - I teach martialarts... a hapkido/shotokan mix to be precise, we have about 100 active students. Anyways, I'd say go for some type of Judo/Aikido/Hapkido + Karate Mix... If you get in the right class you can have ALOT of fun but don't expect to learn how to fly the first day. :fear:

Isn't a particular style of fighting in UFC used more than others? I think it's like Brazilian juijitsu that a majority of them use for really disabling an opponent.

I've known friends who've studied grappling too ... which looks pretty fun/cool ... I think it's basically fighting on the ground and using holds.

like all mma events, with both stand up and ground game, a mixture of fighting styles are needed. If you really want to learn defense, your gonna have to take more than one expertise, and stay open minded.

or in a simple answer: it's because not everyone wants to become a fat american sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. ME ME ME ME !!!

I have been practising Karate for several years. (until I stopped with it, because I moved to another city )

It's really cool. I feel sad when I think about it again .. I'd love to keep on practising that sport.
                    It's good for your healt.
It's good for your fysical condition.
It's good for your psychical condition aswell.
And it might be good whenever you get into a fight so you can defend yourself.

I've participated in a few matches. I became county champion 2 times, and I ended up on the 3rd place on the Dutch National Championships.
When I stopped practising that sports I had the brown belt. (which is the one just before getting the black belt)

And those newbs talking about buying a gun .. Are you gonna shoot someone when you get into a fight ?? You end up in jail for years. Think before you do something, newbies.
And if you wear the knowledge about a sport like karate with you, you feel way more secure. You have more confidence. So whenever someone would start arguing with me, I am not afraid. I know that (aslong as he doesnt call up his 20 friends) I can take him.
But when the psychical knowledge you get from karate, comes in you just try not to get into a fight. But whenever it can't be done in another way, I won't be afraid of fighting someone 1vs1.

I prefer karate above sports like Judo and stuff, because those are just useless. You can't go roll on a floor in a fight, and put ur opponent in some kind of a way so he can't move anymore... what's the use in that ?!? rofl...

                    So go practise Karate.

I agree with that. I just wrote that I have participated in several Karate matches. And I have been fighting vs larger/heavier/stronger opponents than myself, and still have won. It's not about force only. Sure it might be an advantage, but if you are the better/faster fighter you'll even beat up the stronger ppl.
I was training with all 20+ ppl (while I was like 15-16 or so) and I could easily keep up with them in fights.

If you watch K1 sometimes (check ur sports channel) you can aswell see ordinary guys beat up a 2m large 160kilo's heavy opponent.
it's just about your speed and your skills. Not about strength.

it was mentioned that muay thai is force vs force, he did not say karate is force vs force. big difference.

weight is very important with MT hence the different weight classes. when i (being 68 kg) go sparring vs a 0.1 ton guy (sounds cooler than 100 kg) the last thing i want is a hook on my jaw. hell, even blocking his kicks with my shin would simply knock me over. of course you got tactics (lighter is faster) and skill level is a factor but weight means alot.

i dont know much from karate but dont you stop right after you hit a person (a point)? in this way weight would be more a disadvantage.

and in k1, ordinary guys beating up a 2m large 160kilo's heavy opponent? you're talking about a super featherweight beating up a super heavy weight? can ya give me a name/match cause this is really, really bullshit.

I've said it about both karate and muay thai. Karate is force vs force. Just look at their blocks and attacks, also watch some fullcontact sparrings where they dont jump around each other but close in and start mashing. Also, karateists do not stop after punching like they do on during practicing, at least if one did it in a fight it'd look funny =).

I took boxing for 5 years and took second in state as a twelve year old, but then i quit. It's pretty cool though, knowing that if someone ever picked a fight with you, u know the exact spot to hit them and make em go down in one punch. Although i've only been in one fight outside of boxing, so i guess i dont know too much about street fights
