Cats or Dogs? Which do you prefer?

Once I move out on my own, I plan to get a pet. I can never decide between a cat or a dog though. I think having a dog would be awesome, but one of my friends has a cat and it's pretty cool too. Which do you prefer? Which do you have? I don't think I'll be getting both, that's probably a bit too much to handle on my own.

Downsides, benefits? Reasons why you like one over the other?

I'm a cat person. I think it's a personality thing, but a cat seems like a better match for me. Besides, anyone who has ever read a comic strip knows that cats are more interesting while dogs are kind of dopey.

You've got your Garfield, your Bucky Katt, Bill the Cat, Hobbes, while with dogs you're stuck with Odie, Marmaduke and Grimm. If it weren't for Dogbert it'd be a clean sweep.
