  • Low-income housing

I live in a fairly wealthy community in a town surrounded by a couple of unwealthy towns/cities. I live here because well.. I work around here, and I know that my kids will be getting one of the best educations in the state (and in the country, as Connecticut has some of the best school systems). What I've noticed is that there's absolutely no low-income housing projects being built. The homeless are shipped off to a nearby cities so there's no sign of poverty in our town... though it deffinetly exists. I know several retired people that have had to move from the town because of their fixed income and the prices of the housing and land. Our basic pool of wealthy people comes from Pfizer (the makers of Lipitor, Viagra, Clariton, and many more), EB (Electric Boat), a Nuclear Power Plant (one town over), and the largest Sub base in america (Apt is stationed there ).

With that information, I'm wondering... well what would be the benefit of low income housing in my specific town. I believe it will really get people off the streets and keep the community friendly elderly, but why would my town even think twice about putting up some low-income developements?

I'm interested in your thoughts about this issue, because it seems as though if any of those large companies were to go out of business anyways, the town I live in would be absolutely broke and deserted. I'm sure some of you might have the same issue in your town, or perhaps you live in one that is filled with poverty, and you think that perhaps some of the wealthier towns should take some of the load and give people a better education.

I'm sure I'm not giving a topic too hard to debate here

I hate to make this a discrimination issue, but thats generally the case. When money determines the zoning in a particular area, the segregation becomes apparent. And if the stereotypes hold true, if your community started poorer housing options, there will be an introduction of people from the lower end of the income spectrum, which will most likely be old people, minorities, and etc.

And we can't just have a mixing of economic standards like that. It isn't american. Edit: more likely than not, in a richer community the school taxes will be a lot higher (thus funding the schools and etc), which is one of the primary reasons why poorer people receive lower quality education.

I was thinking however that the introduction of low-income housing would actually drop the taxes significantly in my town. Because of the amount of minorities and low-income families, the government would also give grants to the school system.

Paul, you said yourself, you don't see the poverty in your town... that's the reason for no low-income housing. When you have poor people around, crime goes up and people don't take as much care of their houses. Your green manicured lawn will run right up against an apartment building with an old boat out back.

It just brings property values down.

It will generate a lot of trouble. There's really shit council-estate areas where I live and as kids have nothing to do, they go out and victimise people living in the bigger houses. Thank god I'm on the far (good) side of town.

bz you just said something i was gonna say. i will make you more business minded yet.

bioture race has nothing to do with this whole issue. business is color blind. In fact, there are several arguments on how racism actually hurts business.

So you guys are saying, there's absolutely no benefit of low-income housing? Weird, I'm curious as to what the driving force of people in my town are that are pushing low-income housing projects.

I think it's kind of a NIMBY thing.
