  • Gambling

Having recently celebrated my 21st birthday, my grandmother took me to a casino in Louisiana. I did fairly well, but during my stay I noticed a disturbing trend. The people I saw lined up on the slot machines at 5:30 PM were still there at 3:30 AM, and remained there until I left at approximately 2:00 PM.

I think gambling can be fun and relatively harmless if you know how and when to stop, but these people were pumping money into these machines at a rate of $10 a minute, minimum. Barring any bathroom breaks they may have taken, that's $600 an hour, which makes $12,000 in a 20-hour period. To make matters worse, the slots were very tight. They weren't paying out at all. I talked to a player at my table, and he said the majority of the slot players had been there for at least four or five days on end, with no food, no sleep and very little to drink. I shook my head and had to walk away from the table for a minute to wonder how this could happen.

So how does a person get so addicted to gambling, and is there any hope of helping them? Even if they hit the jackpot, it likely won't cover all the money they've spent trying for it. My cousin is a notorious lotto player. He's tried the gambling addict hotlines, and he claims they're no better than talking to a grade-school guidance counselor. I don't know, maybe it just hit home for me since I live in a family full of gamblers, but has anyone else faced anything like this?

Someone should introduce video gaming to them. They want lose any money aside from that spent on new games and they'll still have a lot of flashy lights, sounds, and buttons to press...

Slots are not really gambling, there is no action the punter can do apart from pull the arm or press a button. Any true gambler does not play slots or class it as a sound bet.

First of all, love the icon.

And I agree 100%. With slots, you're at the mercy of a machine with a lot of unknowns. You have no way of telling how loose or tight the machine is until you've basically emptied all your money into it. It's not even a gamble, it's a throwaway.

I dont' know how people get hooked on slots... every once in awhile I used to go across the bidge to Windsor, Ontario (before detroit had casinos) to play the slots, but it was a once-in-awhile thing, just for something fun and different to do. After we went a few times, it got old. I just don't understand how it stays fun for people.

In America, two-thirds of casino revenue is generated from slot play. That should be all the info you need to know about playing slots. It's a suckers bet.

I have a friend who's a slot player, but he makes no delusions about them. Slots are for entertainment only. Just a fun thing to do to blow off steam. If you play slots to make money, you're either in denial about the probability of losing, or just aren't aware of that you're up against about 2:1 odds in favor of the house.

On the other hand, I used to have a very close friend of mine who I moved up to Lake Tahoe with to work at a resort and go snowboarding for free with. He wound up getting addicted to craps, and more than a few times would cash his check and lose it all in a few hours.

He got so bad that while he was house-sitting a friend's cabin (while him and his fianceé were on their honeymoon), he took his mountain bike, and an $800 piece of her jewelery and pawned them so he could "make his money back". He subsequently lost the money he pawned the items for. When they returned from Mexico, she called the Kings Beach Sherriff's Dept and had him arrested. He was jailed for 3 months for grand theft.

So, I have seen the personal destruction it can cause, but on the other hand, there are lots of people who can handle their action and never let it control their lives. I think the most important thing people should know before they gamble is the probability of winning/losing. Know the basic odds of what game you're wagering on, and you won't be such an easy mark for the casino.

tables are great. I have my highs and lows. I play with the intent to lose a certain amount. Last time I played I went up $300 on carribean poker. And lost all of it the next day plus the allowance for the day. Alas, I got 5 hours of entertainment and several free beers. Worth it if you ask me.

                      4 basic steps:

                      1. you have to know when to hold 'em
                      2. know when to fold 'em
                      3. know when to walk away
                      4. know when to run

i don't gamble that much, but when i do i don't mind losing as long as i'm not up a bunch and THEN lose it along with more money..i did that yesterday. NOT COOL!
PLEASE, DON'T BE MISGUIDED...YA BITIN'. AND I'MA HAVE TA DIS YA, UNDERSTAND MISTA?

i play poker (texas holdem) most days online. i'm not addicted - it's just soemthing to do whilst talking to friends online.

the only reason i play poker is because it does take more skill than luck to win, whih isn't the case for most other types of gambling. you're also playing against people and not the house so you actually have a chance at making a profit.

you just gotta know when to stop

I play Texas-Holdem. And I was playing it before this huge craze, I've been playing it for 5 or 6 years. But yea, my mom loves to gamble, she's actually up in Cleveland gambling right now. She just called a few minutes ago and said she won $1,600 too. So I'm not complaining about her being gone

Carribean poker is a nice gentle game for casino's. Mind you there is still not much skill in folding hands dependent on seeing one of the dealers cards.
