I'm just looking for one that's still fairly easy to use - i'm only going to be using it for web-work, meaning something with a text editor and an FTPis fine.

I started out with Debian and it's not that hard. You'd just need a few tips in the beginning.

Jerome since you're all thixed about the "mac look" and you're new to this, SuSE might suit your (meager) needs. http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=2

Haven't played around with mandrake at all, but the SuSE installer is in the vein of installing XP as far as ease.

          hum... linux...
check this and choose what you want

          here is the list

well either way my personal experience tells me that suse mandrake, redhat, debian, knoppix, slackware, gentoo, are not difficult to grasp you can get what you want easely sometimes without resorting to the command line...
i myself use redhat more often but they are all similar if you just want the regular stuff... other thing you might want is your x-windows system that you want to install well if you have a slow machine you might want gnome (or fluxbox :P ) but if your pc has the resources just go to a more advanced one like KDE or something...

i use suse, and its great..
                Throughout time, there’s been
                crimes, throughout our history
But not as great, as the one of late, affecting you and me
Once a nation proud and free, and now we’re weeping sorrow’s tears
Tragedy’s approaching, it’s worse than all your fears

                Come on my countrymen
Come on and take a stand
Don’t let ‘em take away your land

                the Wenger bus is coming
and all the kids are running
                from London to Manchester
                cos he's a child molester

Just talk to a pro at your local Best Buy / FutureShop or any other retail store. You aren't going to know what's best for you until you ask people who sell it everyday. I'm not saying buy it from them, go home and pirate it soon after.
I dont think everyone agrees with you that tyf is a vet.. eeeeh? (2 tired to type the rest)

They know about as much as my grandmother in Linux. Truthfully, I have only used SuSe, but it was for a very brief and short amount of time. I had noproblems with it.

Today's Linux is very user friendly you'll see it's easy to get used to it... outside, i mean what you see, is very similar to the latest win xp although very diferent inside... you no longer have to resort to the command line as oftes has you had to in earlyer versions... well, some even ont have x-windows u had to do it all manually inch: how i hate unix and solaris older editions...

Out of curiosity, what is the need to install Linux, what does it give you that you don't get from Windows.

To mention a couple of things, it's free, you can get daily updates to your software, software is free, it's safer, it's faster, it's more stable and using it is so much fun.

It's more for web design and file storage I believe, I have no idea though.

What sort of software can you get for/run on a Linux system. Can you get all the normal Word Processor, Spreadsheet etc.. And what about games? I assume most Windows games won't run on a Linux system (I may be mistaken).
