Emo is hardcore with more melodic sounding lyrics. Texas is the Reason, Mineral, the Promise Ring, etc. Fugazi isn't really emo at all, you could say they were the first indie band The Rites of Spring, Antioch Arrow, and other bands like that weren't really "melodic" if I'm using your term correctly, but their lyrics were...guess, emotional.
