Well, I actually really liked Shenanigans, American Idiot was good, but I have gone off that now, which is unusual as usually I will over-play a lot of albums I like. The move to be politically informed wasn't the best idea of theirs.

agreed 100%Originally posted by genocidalI didn't mean to discredit everything the band has done since the Joshua Tree. I only used that album as an example of what they are capable of since it happens to be my favourite of their's. I also said that some of their 90s work is good but by and large I am not a fan of their albums produced as a whole - just a few select tracks. I don't believe I've heard very much of All That You Can't Leave Behind so I will give that a listen. I became largely distinterested in U2 after seeing more recent live performances and hearing their radio hits. I have no problem with mainstream music - I am not an indie loser (sorry Jerome). I just don't particularly like the ballady arena-rock stuff that Bono is putting out now where it seems the amount of emotion he puts into his lyrics seems inappropriate and, at many times, laughable.
Also, I agree with Peanuts in that Bono has gotten more egotistical lately which doesn't make his music any more attractive to me, anyway. But as you say, TK, it is all a matter of taste and I can still respect a liking for this type of music it is just not what I wanted U2 to put out after hearing classics like The Joshua Tree.
except I loved "War." and my Fave. U2 song is "Sunday Bloody Sunday"
and what about Green Day? Anyone care to disagree that everything Post Dookie is kinda tame?

Bono himself is quite pretentious, I believe that their music has soured over the years.

Well that's a bit different. You don't like U2 because you just don't like U2. I'm talking about the people who don't like current U2 because they aren't what they think U2 should be.

For me, it's not maturity or mainstream anything. It's just too hard for me to get past Bono's voice. It's like a laid back Axl Rose.

All of these people saying that U2 hasn't been good in a long time, not since Joshua Tree, seem to be overlooking All That You Can't Leave Behind, which I thought was a great album, and one of the best of 2001. While I do think Joshua Tree was their best album with Achtung Baby second, people seem to think U2 hasn't done anything since. People are quick to leap on things like them being too mainstream or too commercial, but I found a couple of songs on All That You Can't Leave Behind to be incredibly earnest.
Maybe it's just because I myself have matured a bit and All That was more of a "grown up" album, and maybe it's a matter of people not liking things that are mainstream. On the other hand, perhaps this, like many other discussions about music on these forums, is really just a contest to see whose musical tastes are the most pretentious.

Never said I was one of the people who doesn't think they're hip hop, but there are people who feel they aren't, they feel that they're just white boys who can't do anything else. So, just calm down.Originally posted by genocidalOkay music genius, if the Beastie Boys aren't hip-hop, regardless of your personal opinion of them, then what are they? I don't consider Green Day not rock just because I don't like them. Plus, it's not like hip-hop is all that respectable of a music type these days anyways, unless you're really into fucking bitches and capping fools (which you very well could be since it's like you're under the age of 15).
Why does everyone assume that if you don't agree with them you're 15 years old? Is it because that's the only way they can rationalize the argument? I was thinking the same about you, Genocidal. What with all the childish name calling. I mean really, "poopholes"?
Most of it isn't even on Joshua Tree. U2 isn't a great band. High pitched vocals and guitarist that the band doesn't really need anyway isn't talent, it's just annoying. Plus, I thought they were political rockers, where are the politics in their songs besides "Sunday, Bloody Sunday"?Originally posted by genocidalWhere is Joshua Tree quality material?!

my dad bought 'how to dismantle an atomic bomb'. he had 'the joshua tree' too. so i listened to the joshua tree. a+. then i started their new album. "vertigo" is pretty good, so i was optimistic. then i heard the other 10 tracks.
2 words: aural holocaust.
their new album is total garbage, u2 hasnt been good in so long, i can't believe people actually like them and that they actually won a grammy.
oh wait, yes i can, people are idiots and the grammy's suck.

After actually downloading this new U2 album since hearing so much about it I can now safely retract my earlier statement about U2 being a respectable band mentioned at the Grammys. Wtf happened? This shit sounds like gay ass arena-rock to the extreme. Where is Joshua Tree quality material?! But I guess I need to face the fact that U2 lost most of its real talent after 1990, hold a few good songs found on generally sub-par albums. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, however, is not even sub-par.

Shenanigans was a good album, despite it being filled with B-sides.

let's be honest, this was the year to give out awards to washed up rockers.
Anything Post "Dookie" for Green Day isnt worth 99 cents.
And Anything Post "War" for U2 is moderate at best.
The Killers deserved it, flat out.
