The term RPG is much wider than most would first define it.

I would consider Secret of Mana, Diablo, Everquest, Final Fantasy and Baldur's Gate all to be RPGs, but each game is dramatically different from the others in terms of structure and gameplay.

RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, tend to be more numbers-oriented, in that they pay a lot of attention to stats and figures, since they follow the long tradition of table-top RPGs. They are also popular because they tend to be less linear than other types of RPGs. Diablo is more action oriented, but to an extent. It is more action oriented for a PC RPG, but not if you compare it with a ame like Secret of Mana (which is closer to being an action-adventure style game a la Legend of Zelda). Heck, some people even consider Zelda to be an RPG, though that is mainly because of the fantasy setting. Games like the Final Fantasy series tend to be very popular among console players and teenaged players because of their high production values, storylines and characters. There are some of the more traditional RPG players who grew up on AD&D who would say that FF is a dumbed down mainstreamed RPG series because stats are less important and the plotlines tend to be more linear.

RPG settings is typically fantasy-themed, though not always.

Diablo 2 has many attributes of an RPG game. But first, let me define RPG.

RPG stands for, "Roll Playing Game" in which you play roles. Simple as that eh? In RPG, you do certain things. You battle enemies. Depending on the game, you battle them in many different ways. FF series has you battle them in it's own battle mode. Games like Secret of Mana has you battling just like in Diablo 2. Secret of Mana is an RPG and is much like Diablo 2 where both are Action type RPGs. Action RPGs are usually where you are not thrown into a battle mode like FF series but you are there and the enemy appears before you. If you choose to attack it, you will just approach it and strike with your weapon. You use spells and attacks and use healing on yourself to stay alive, much like any other RPG. There's also a storyline you follow in Diablo 2 in which you are trying to hunt down Diablo and his siblings. If I wasn't mistaken or my irony detector hasn't broken, Diablo 2 is very much an RPG. Don't you think. I must be wrong. =)

    KINGDOM HEARTS (Playstation 2)
    by Squaresoft and Disney
    1 Player

This is an action/rpg that has all of your favorite characters from the Disney movies in the same game as the Final Fantasy Characters! This game is good for both young and old. The story revolves around 3 original characters - Sora, Riku, and Kairi. And Sora's quest to find them after their island was destroyed by the darkness. You also help Donald Duck and Goofy (both with their trademark voice acting!!) find King Mickey Mouse after he dissappeared from Disneyland (its a planet). You then do battle with the darkness in Wonderland, the Jungles of Tarzan, and the Deserts of Aladdin, and many, many more!!

The battle system is like Star Ocean 2's. You just hack and slash in random battles that take place in the game (ie. there is no set place you fight in over and over after a random battle occurs, like Final Fantasy 7). You fight using the Keyblade and you get different key chains to attach onto it to make the keyblade more powerful.

Overall i enjoyed this game and loved seeing Aeris again! (I TOLD YA SHE WAS ALIVE!!!)

    Gameplay 5/5 *great battle system*
Graphics 5/5 *beautiful FMV movies, and good in game graphics*
Control 3/5 *Sora sometimes doesnt go where you want him to*
Characters 5/5 *AERIS!...and the other FF characters!*
Storyline 4/5 *this isnt epic, but square quality none-the-less*
Replay Factor 1/5 *once you beat it, your done*
Sound 4/5 *the voice acting is superb, but not the SFX*

Overall 4.5/5 *it was just lacking a little something special i think*

    gimme any more review ideas!

I found FFX to be a very good game - the dynamic switching in and out of party members kicks various forms of ass. However, it would have been much better with an option to play with the original Japanese voice actors doing the speaking and a true-to-translation set of subtitles. You can't say you really felt anything between Tidus and Yuna with those horrible voices. Auron and Wakka and sometimes Lulu were passable. Buuuut, it wasn't quite up to snuff.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for the Dreamcast had a J-language track which was excellent, but the subs were not true to the spoken words.

Does Kingdom Hearts have this option? What newer RPGs do? Indeed, what newer games at all do? I tend to like those better. Authenticity woo! (Yeah, I'm one of those people whose menus in Smash Bros. Melee are left in Japanese)

If there is one "Non-Mainstream" Console RPG to get.
STAR OCEAN 2 - THE SECOND STORY IS IT!!!!!!!
STAR OCEAN 2 - THE SECOND STORY IS IT!!!!!!!
STAR OCEAN 2 - THE SECOND STORY IS IT!!!!!!!

Star Ocean 2 - The Second Story
    created by ENIX
    1 Player
1 to 4 people in play during battle

This game has a beautifully done world map, and the characters in this game are easy to know and relate to. The story to this game ranks up with Final Fantasy 7. The very very beginning has alot of talking and no action, but that is just setting up the story. Once you leave the first town the game really starts. The battle system is very unique. It isnt like the traditional style. Its more action based, think Kingdom Hearts, but better. The customablity of Items, Weapons, and Spells is off the charts! The game can be told through the eyes of the two main charatcers Claude and Rena. At the beginning you pick who's story you wanna follow and you get an insight to their feelings and thoughts. And sometimes they split up on certain missions or during events. Then you follow the character you picked. The difficulty is medium, but its easy for people to jump into and then the learning curve is very easy. But, "expert/hardcore rpgists" will not be bored due to the storyline and the customization of items, weapons, and skill points (and much much more)

Gameplay 5/5 *well made battle system*
Graphics 3/5 *this is for PS1, so they aren't great, but were for their day*
Control 4/5 *this takes a quick time to learn, just experiment*
Characters 5/5 *you gotta love em!*
    Storyline 5/5 *Squaresoft quality story*
Replay Factor 5/5 *you get 2 storys and many sidequests. way more than final fantasy*
Sound 3/5 *Resident Evil quality voice acting, but that isnt a bad thing if you think it's funny*

FINAL SCORE - 4/5 *I love this game, but look past the graphics for a true gem of the gaming world. Don't overlook this awesome game, and look for Star Ocean 3 for PS2!

Divine Divinity is an awesome game. It's like Diablo but better. Better graphics, more complex, great sounds and a much better plot. (if there ever was one in diablo) Definately worth a try.
