the 1989 one is probly like the best picture of all time.

That contest seemed a lil bit like a who can conjure the most gruesome pic of the year. But maybe the world needs a lil more of that.

I remember watching it on the news in 1989 and I knew even then as a 10 year-old that that image would stick with me forever as a symbol of courage and determination.

It's amazing really. Small snatches of a moment in time, showing how little in fact our species has progressed from a time when bears would hunt and eat us for food. I think the idealism behind the thought that it's a very important thing a person can do to grab ahold of an important event and put it down to inform people so that we can all learn and hopefully better ourselves because of it, is what put many of my family, me included in to working at a newspaper. The reality of what that job is like aside, the idea behind it is still a noble one.

The memories of the first time I saw several of those Vietnam era pictures still haunts me. The monk immolating himself, the prisoner execution, and the girl running from her village that had been napalmed.

If there are horrible pictures there, the lesson to learn from it is that horrible things happen. You shouldn't turn away and try to ignore them, because that doesn't make it go away.

Yesterday, we finished up studying the chinese revolution, cultural revolution, up to the tiananment square thing. We watched about 5-10 seconds of footage of the person standing in front of the tanks.
