Is there anywhere (apart from yahoo) where I can play my friend at chess or something? We've both got this thing where if we're meant to be writing an essay we log onto msn messenger and all we can play is bejewelled

Edit: Nothing too complicated or involving registration, she's completely computer illiterate

i have used fics and you don't need to register as you can log into it as a guest.

You can use a graphical interface, i've got winboard downloaded so i use that and i like it. There is also Xboard for unix but i haven't got it so i don't know about that. get them both from here open up winboard and click on use an internet chess server and look in the list for the one that says

freechess.org /icsport=5000 /icshelper=timeseal

(or something with freechess.org in it :P) and connect to that and type guest. get your name and msg it on msn to the other person who can copy and paste it then type match and paste in the name(info on that comand) in the consle and you'll have a game of chess.

you can play from the site too as it comes with a browser java interface , if you use this get your name by clicking settings when you log in as guest.
