I'm decent on a dvorak layout, but I use the computers at school so much that I'd rather not get too used to dvorak and lose my qwerty skill.

I communicate faster on qwerty than with speech and people tell me I talk too fast. I am constantly requested to speak slower. I prefer using letters for communication because the reduced amount of misunderstandings and I hate trying to talk slow!
Once I met a girl who talked faster than me and was able to produce an answer for any type of question instantly. I was like W T F! The only problem was that she would shut up like never.

Call me stubborn, but that layout just looks really awkward. After thirteen years of QWERTY it would be very difficult, if not impossible, for me to learn another layout. I might try it one day when the spaceships get boring though.

i dunno, learning a new layout might turn a lot of people off because it means you have to learn stuff. also, if you're at a uni or use other computers, the switch to qwerty and dvorak and back is going to be awkward.

I may give this a try sometime, but I use alot of differant computers at school and at home. Another problem would be screwing up your key defs and such in SS.

Yeah, he tells me I could expect to get 30% faster, which would be insane since I'm already about 90wpm. I'd be the fastest person ever.

I only use one computer at work and one computer at home, so it'd be perfect except that my wife also uses the computer at home and im' pretty sure she won't want to learn this.

I think that, well for me at least, learning the dvorak is pretty much just like starting typing all over again. It took me several years to get as fast as I am now, so maybe it would take me several years again to learn dvorak to a similar proficiency.

Forget Mavis Beacon or what have you. The best typing tutor out there is 'The Typing Of The Dead'. I'll snail-mail you a copy if you like, or you can get your copy from you know where.
