b) while saying other things are funny, saying "please take me off your list, and don't call again" is the most effective thing to say to telemarketers, you could, in theory, sue them if they call you again

Quicker way around it.. if you say hello and there's a pause, possibly a click, that means their call-o-matic has detected your voice, and has confirmed a live person is on the line. Then, you're automatically connected to a representative.

My Mum normally asks for the caller's name, name of company, comany address and how they got hold of our number (We're not EX Directory, but we are on the "do not call us" list).
