thanks for the input, i forgot to say, before the run i play a bunch of different baseball things for roughly 1 or 2 hours then run, but it's not really nice weather here yet and i hate public swimming pools, and no bike so i may go try the step thing at the gym with a couple buddies if they will come, my training so far is coming nicely and i can notice a big difference in my body and how i feel after 2 weeks and a few days.

I am so fucking sick of cardio at the gym.

I had to start using the machines because something got messed after I ran outside on pavement too much. Now I fly yuppie at the gym at night...

... But hopefully this will all change soon because I am finally going to see a podiatrist(sp?) next month so hopefully he can fix me up to run outside.

Cross your fingers for me. :turned:

I suppose the gym is good because it got me into other things like strength training and pilates. Ideally, I want to run in the morning and do the gym at night with minimal cardio and more strength training.

p.s. The South Beach Diet didn't work out.

Dude, the most important thing is not what kind of exercise you do, its how persistent you are at sustaining that same amount of exercise per day over a course of, lets say a month. Most people don't last 1 week.

My advice is that you find a martial art with a sadistic trainer. There are lots of MAs that are different from eachother so it shouldn't be too hard to find something you like. And even if you are anti-exercise you will still do the drills just to not look like an ass to the people around you who are doing them (same for any type of group exercise). Or you could try to find a parkour group near you. You don't need any equipment except for shoes and probably some protection in the beginning. It's free and damn if it isn't good exercise. It's like running but fun instead of the most boring exercise on earth.

Bilbo, martial arts and parkouring isn't that good for basic condition cardio. Both require too explosive contraction of muscles and the heart rate rises too high.

Both are excellent excersices on the side of the basic cardio though, improving both coordination and muscle endurance.

Try Mountain or street bicycling...at least the scenery will not be the same as on the track. You can also try using a rowing machine or an elliptical machine if you belong to a gym. If it's a modern gym, bring headphones as they usually have a tv screen setup in front of you! I always enjoy a 30 minute cardio on the elliptical watching ESPN2 Cold Pizza in the morning!

Jump Rope for 15 minutes will also get the cardio going!

Adman if you want to lose weight you should try doing anaerobic exercise. It's basically cardio but a bit easier. Just go on any normal cardio machine (cardio bike for example) and pedal easy for about 2 minutes, then turn up the level and go as hard as you can for a minute, and repeat the process for 15-30 minutes. I don't know the exact statistics but anaerobic workouts metabolize something like 9 times as much fat for energy than cardio workouts of the same length. And you also don't lose as much breath doing these workouts (mind you, anaerobics aren't near as good for your heart as endurance cardio is)

Is it weight you are trying to lose?

If so cardio alone will not do the job.

Diet + Exercise is the way to go.

Count your calories. Do not eat after 8PM. Largest meal of the day should be breakfast and gradually go to smaller meals as the day goes on.

Watch what you eat and work out 5 days a week combining cardio with some weight training and you should drop the weight rather quickly.

I was a personal trainer yrs ago and if you need the formulas for figuring out your cloric input/output let me know.

i don't care about losing weight i just want to be able to compete better in the sports i play in. I'm playing 2 men's league baseball, one hardball one slow pitch witha wide variety of people skilled and not so skilled, i'd like to be one of the skilled players and being able to run around and have endurance to play a full game without getting tired is what i care for. I'll keep you guys posted how it's going when the fucking weather decides to stop being so shit and the fields aren't washed out.

1500m: 5:24 (gonna get a huge PR on Wednesday, I can feel it ^_^)
3K: 12:30 (only because I had no one to run with :P)

I'm a distance runner for Track, and I also do cross country. A lot of people consider it boring just running for a long period of time, but it really isn't.

You can either bring some music along for your run/jog (or not), run with a friend or a group of friends (that are a little faster than you so you can get a a better workout), or enter competitions/races (or something that a ton of people do, and that is timed.) When you're running with other people, it becomes a LOT easier.
