Their strategy is instead of making you pay monthly they continually release expansion packs of the game, with all the new skills and areas and stuff. If you don't buy them, then you're at a disadvantage. It's like playing a collectable card game. You have to keep buying new cards to keep up. Same idea here. So if you want to keep up with everyone else in the game it basically amounts to the same price as a montly fee I"d imagine.

Of course you can stick with just the original game, but then you'll be the loser who doesn't have any of the cool stuff.

Cause they would just rape the warriors with backfire, stun, knockback, DoT, "thorns" (Diablo 2 - you get back melee damage toward you) spells. Everything has a perfect balance.
yes but still it seems like if both guilds has same classes warriors, archers and mages then higher lvl win since players can't dodge or aim their hits with own skills.

Expansion packs come out every 6-9 months and are about the size of the original game. Usually Expansion packs are $45 or less. Now look at WoW, what is it $14 a month (14*6) hmmm?

But I don't like the way they advertise the game as a "one off charge" but then produce expansion packs that are more or less complusory if you want to do well in-game

Because when you're addicted to the game you become a consumer whore, I can't even begin counting the number of Everquest Exspansion's I've seen.

It'd be less than $45. The original game costs 40.

I suppose Nailed. However, I don't see what the big deal is to buy new game content (aka chapters) for Guild Wars every 6 or so months. $45 really isn't that much if you keep in consideration that you don't have to pay a monthly fee. I mean really.

Dameon yeah. Meh, I bought the game for $65. $5 for shipping...

It's still purposely misleading, and was developed as such. Their entire sales campaign is developed around a "no monthly fee" claim, which isn't really true. Yes it's cheaper than WoW, or a true MMORPG, but GW doesn't have nearly the same amount of content as a true MMORPG.

You're still going to end up playing whichever you like better, but don't kid yourself about GW being some sort of blow against subscription games.

I wouldn't really call Guild Wars a true MMORPG at all. Also, I never stated that it will "be a sort of blow against subscription games." My only point is that the expansion packs are a plus. I'd rather much pay $45 or whatever for an expansion pack that contains more features and lots more story, then $14 a month to play a "let's spend 300 hours leveling" game.

Then we agree, I don't think GW is a true MMORPG either, and said as much. Their sales campaign has been very very geared towards the "no monthly fee" aspect of their product, and I'm just saying it's not exactly true.

As for paying $45 for story... well.. unless leaps and bounds have been made since late beta (last event on the 17th I think?), you're talking a 10x mark up for a chapter from a half baked fantasy novel that would cost you 5 bucks at a grocery store check out line.

I've said before I don't like GW much, but it's not necessarily because of the concept. Diablo type hack/slash games really don't appeal to me, nor does the simplified combat (by that, I mean you can only load so many skills, thus limiting your flexibility), but that wouldn't turn me off to the game if it had anything resembling a compelling story, or even a novel/interesting one.

I have yet to see anything really awesome from their art department, nor did any of the missions I played have more than a topical level of immerision. In my mind, this game is a lot like Doom 3, technologically amazing, but they spent all their money on programmers, and not enough on writers/artists.

They say on their website they'll be priced comparable to the original game. So probably around $40-$50 per

The 8 skills lock is there so you have to think before you start a mission. Not have 200 skills at hand and ,well, just slaughter you victims without to much thought.

Also, at least GW has some sort of a story. It's no R.A. Salvatore, but it's still worthy. ^-^

yeah, overall I'd say GW is good value for money, but the way they basically force you to buy more software is still a jip. I mean £30 for 6th month's entertainment isn't bad

So what are your characters names?

I just started about 2 1/2 hours ago. My first character is "Gar The Decapitator" as a warrior but I dunno what I'm going to pick as a 2nd profession yet.
