i strung a guitar today

I've strung my guitar a few times, however I was drinking and playing my guitar a little while back and the third string was out of tune. So I tightened it a little and there seemed to be no change. So I tightened it a bit more and no change. So I tightened and tightened and then TWANG my 1st string gave and whipped me on the back of the hand. I was tightening the wrong string
