  • The 10 most dangerous books of all time!

    Or, my summer reading list.

Some conservative group put together a list of books with dangerous, subversive ideas.

I would have thought "Origin of the Species" would have received higher consideration. I wouldn't have called this a list of "dangerous" or even "harmful" books, but "subversive" would be a better term. Calling it "harmful" lowers its credibility to me, and reinforces the negative stereotypes of conservatives.

EDIT: Sun-Tzu wasn't included because this is only a list of 19th and 20th century texts.

Keynes develops one of the more influential theories of economics so his book gets blamed for the US national debt and his book is considered "mostly harmful"?

          Yawn, nothing to see here.

Abby Hoffman's 'Steal this Book' (which I did in about '75) but is still a good read.

Snow Blind (forgot author) about the cocaine trade at it's peak. Learn how to properly smuggle drugs and count cash. “Doing good cocaine is like flying to Paris for breakfast”.

I am surprised the Bible didn’t make it on to the list. It could be considered dangerous given the amount of deaths that could be attributed to it.

Summary: Mao, who died in 1976, was the leader of the Red Army in the fight for control of China against the anti-Communist forces of Chiang Kai-shek before, during and after World War II. Victorious, in 1949, he founded the People’s Republic of China, enslaving the world’s most populous nation in communism. In 1966, he published Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong, otherwise known as The Little Red Book, as a tool in the “Cultural Revolution” he launched to push the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese society back in his ideological direction. Aided by compulsory distribution in China, billions were printed. Western leftists were enamored with its Marxist anti-Americanism. “It is the task of the people of the whole world to put an end to the aggression and oppression perpetrated by imperialism, and chiefly by U.S. imperialism,” wrote Mao.

Cute how they put the Feminist Mystique on there, go back home Condoleeza Rice, please.

Fucking 'Silent Spring' is on the list. Aside from PITA what environmentalists are harmful? (I just hate PITA)

I don't really see Tzu's work being "subversive" or "dangerous" to the establishment, however (at least, not directly). It doesn't really challenge the reader to question dominant social, political, or relgious paradigms. Whereas, the rest of those books do.

Zem, are you seriously planning on reading all that material this summer? More power to you, if you do.

i wasnt really trying to name a book thats dangerous to the establishment, the rest seem pretty long and complicated so i added this to the list, thats all

I was thinking about the same thing. Darwanism, however profound, was definitely subversive and "harmful" especially to religion.

                            who cares?

Part of life is reading contreversial ideas. Shut up conservatives, and you too liberals, while you're at it.

I love Kinsey, he's an awesome guy.
Karl Marx's heart was in the right place.
                              John Dewey, I adore.
Comte's heart was in the right place as well.

Why are these books dangerous? People are dangerous when they get ahold of a belief system they're willing to die for, books cant be dangerous unless many of them fall on top of you.
