  • Any Neil Young Fans?

I've been a long time fan of Sonic Youth, and they have always mentioned being influenced by Neil Young, and how he is the real Godfather of Grunge. I had never really heard much of his experimental stuff, just his hits like Rockin In the Free World, but I saw a movie (Year of the Horse) which had some clips of him in the 70's and 80's, and it kind of gave me more of an understanding of why SY thought he was so influential. I thought it was pretty damn cool, actually.

Just wondering if anyone else in here is a big Neil Young fan, and if you could point me in the direction of a couple of albums you would think are good "starter" albums for his edgy, experimental shit...you know, with the wailing feedback symphonies, and other such psychedelic, shit.

Please, no responses from Tone. You have zero credibility with me, so I won't be weighing any of your quasi-nonsense into it anyway.

Harvest Moon is a really good CD (among many others by him) but I'm a huge fan of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. So yeah, you pretty much can't go wrong with Neil Young.

Neil Young (born November 12, 1945) is a Canadian musician and filmmaker. Coming to prominence with rock band Buffalo Springfield, and reaching his commercial peak during the singer songwriter boom of the early 1970s, his career is marked by experimentation and frequent stylistic changes that have often left critics, audiences, and (in one notable case) his record label, baffled. His back catalogue includes folk and country, hard rock, rockabilly, garage rock (which saw him tagged "The Godfather of Grunge") and electronica. He retains a core audience of devoted followers.

Neil Young meets Grunge only when he joined forces w/Crazy Horse.

There really is no grunge effect to him w/o the backing of the band Crazy Horse.

Saw Sonic Youth open for Neal many times. Every time they did, it was billed as Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

So if ya want the grunge sound from Neal, listen to Live Rust or any other Crazy Horse backed recordings.

So was it the backing of the band Crazy Horse or those ugly mutton chop sideburns that gave him the Grunge label?

Doing the Mirrorball album with Pearl Jam probably didn't help remove him from that whole "movement." Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed that album.
