your life does not matter as much as your brain chemistry, thats why all people in similar situations and societies vary as greatly emotionally as they do intellectually, its just not seen easy like other attributes are. it is also why there are mood swings for no reason. the state of your brain controls how much pleasure and depth of perception you have with your external environment. for example, you can be filthy rich, happily married, have many friends, a good place to live, and structure in your life and suddenly come down with a worsening depression and not able to get out of bed or become suicidal in agony. or you can be in a much more modest living situation and experience a sense of wellbeing or hypo-mania all of the time.

Depression and Mania both have nothing to do with thoughts or emotions

Ever have a single drink of alcohol in your life? what happens? well, the feeling in your head area changes and its pleasurable, and we call this by the term 'BUZZ'. Your state of consciousness is changed, different than norm.

Depression and Mania are the same thing. the feeling in the head area is different, in the case of depression its a very unpleasant and torturous feeling in the head area, as opposed to alcohol buzz, which is pleasurable to most.

So just as the altered feeling in the head area and the change in state of consciousness from alcohol has nothing to do with thought or emotion, but may affect throught or emotion, the same is true with mania or depression

the strange anology of alcohol 'buzz' is used here because its the most common thing that people have experienced which alters feeling in the head area and mindstate, so they can take that and imagine other head feelings and mindstates.
