  • Anyone still use any of the old Windows OS's?

I still use Windows 98 when it seems as if everyone is using the XP now. I've gotten so accustomed to windows 98 that I feel that there is no need to upgrade. Is it worth it? What do you guys use? Do you like it? I was thinking of downgrading even further to something more simpler like unix. I don't know. Any opinions?

win 98 is cool i use it at home too. i allways like it and thought i wouldnt need an upgrade.

but then i had to use win 2003 server at work. i liked win 2003 server a lot. it its way simple to deal with. click and go. install and configure stuff. the bad thing on it is that it requires a decent comp 1.5/2.0 gh with like 256kb of ram memory.

I got IIS + dotnet + php + ssl + apache tomcat + mysql + sql server +smtp server, running at this machine and it's still fast.

im thinking about buying a new comp and put a win 2000/2003 server here

I can swicth between Os's at start up, mostly use '98 for sound editing as recording mixed audio is easier. Does anyone else have a problem with static while recording via mixed audio?

Windows 98 is a POS. For real. The rule of thumb is that if it hasn't broken on you yet, you're lucky, and it's going to break soon. Do yourself a huge favor, and if you plan on buying a new HD soon (or if you can backup your old one on CD/DVD/external-media-of-your-choice), reformat and install XP. Home, Pro... doesn't matter unless you're going to use the extra features of Pro.

Schope: Why would you use Server 2003 instead of XP at home? Unless you're doing a lot of IIS web/ftp/smtp/etc-serving or using it as an AD server, there's no need to gobble up the extra cycles. And why would you run both IIS and Apache?

Ice-Demon: I do all my multi-tracking on XP. It's quite nice.

it's worth it. you can tweak around xp to keep much of the same feel of 98.. I was in the same boat as you a few years ago. XP rarely bluescreens on me, and has a few more administrative tools (the computer management and task manager are notably better). it could just be me, but it seems smoother than 98 to me, as well.

I use Windows XP Professional in 'Windows Classic Style' mode. The title bars, menus and buttons are like windows 98

put your windows CD in and type sfc /scannow to scan your protected system files to see if a virus caused damage and originals will replace

Well, my cousin had Windows ME ... and it was so bloody horrible .... I wanted to destroy his computer. But, I guess I forgot how 98 was after my horrible ME experience, and my newest computer came with XP, and I haven't had a thought go by saying "Hey, I wish I still had 98".

Default installs of xp (or any win OS) have alot of crap you never use or want. Cook your own install with this --> link to nlite

My dad is a complete tech 'tard. He had Win 95 Plus loaded on his 10 yr old computer and was mad that he couldn't surf the internet with it.

I had 95 on one of my computers not too long ago, but I finally got around to reformatting it and put XP on it. About half of my computers have XP on them, half have 98. I honestly don't care which I use, it's all the same to me :P

Magi koz if you have some way to save all the important stuff you dont want to lose and your pc can have 1gb of disk memory always free and you have at the very least 256mb/RAM then go for win xp home edition or pro if you want the added features... if you don't have those prerequesites then stick to win 98 SE, otherwise you will be losing performance.
