I've never read it, and to be honest I'd feel a little embarrassed to read it, lol.

          Ever READ (not watched) LOTR?

Day and nights difference, my friend.

(And yeah I know they're not "compareable" since lotr outpwns HP in everything, and Harry Crapper wasn't made to be a lookalike of lotr)

I liked the Harry Potter movies more than the LOTR movies.

But that doesn't say much since I didn't like the LOTR movies.

I liked the Harry Potter movies.

Nope, I'm just stating what I've found to be true in my experience. If you've actually read the books and decide you didn't like them, that's fine. But to judge something you know nothing about? Well, that's just stupid (and expected and normal).

but they completely don't. the silmarillion in particular is ridiculously, unforgivably inconsistent. you can go from an awesome page to an utterly shit page in the space of one minute of reading.

I have the set of LOTR books right next to my Harry Potter ones. Could the fact that I read HP before LOTR have something to do with my preference? Maybe. Does it have to do with personal preference as to which of the storylines I like better (I can relate more to the problems of a kid my age than a 50-year old dwarf)? Probably. So yeah, I'll take Harry Potter over LOTR any day.

P.S. I enjoy both series very much.

I used to mock Harry Potter myself until I actually started reading it. Then I realized it's actually quite good.

Reminds me of a light (and magical) version of one of my favorite books, Ender's Game.

LOTR is good because you get immersed in a fantasy world which is vast and immensely well thought out.

Harry Potter is good not because it's all well thought out and makes perfect sense, but I think there's a little bit in everyone who loves the Harry Potter series that wishes that we too could have attended Hogwarts as a student.
