Umm please dont tell me your going to spend $3,500 for a new bike when you get used ones that are practically half the price and run like they are brand new. I personally recommend the Honda cruiser. Dam thing hasnt been modified for almost 10 years. Perfect first bike and doesnt matter what year you get because they look all the same. I know for a fact you can get a brand new one for $3000, but Id seriously recommend used. The best thing about a used bike is it allows you to really understand your bike completely and you'll learn everything about it and will allow for uber experince that you cant learn from buying a brand new bike.
Thats my two cents that I borrowed from my uncle and hes been riding for +30 years.
Lol, um...I don't think you know what you're talking about.
First of all, you can't buy a new bike for $3,500, unless it's a 250 Honda Virago. I was referring to buying a slightly used Suzuki SV650, which mostly sell for around $4k, with low miles.
The only thing decent you're going to get for $2,000 is a used 250 Virago, or a 1980 750 Honda that leaks various fluids and needs a shitload of maintenance. And that will be cool for a few months, but you're not taking a 250cc on the freeway, unless you don't have an aversion to pain, injury, and possibly death.
$2,000-5,000 is what you will pay for a used bike in "very good" or "like new" condition, which is what you want, because you want to re-sell the bike in a year or two for the same price you bought it at. Also, the price you pay for a bike is largely contingent on the engine size and type of ride it is (crusier, standard, sportbike, dual-sport).
Then you take that money and use it as a down payment on your new 2005 Triumph Bonneville T-100, which sell for $8k new.
I got my driver's license permit today :stuart: Clear the roads!

I think what Pan is talking about is the very high likely hood that your first bike you're bound to fuck up. Whether it's an accident, or general being new to the whole thing, it's fairly likely that it's going to end up in a bad way. I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're young then it's an almost certainty. And if you get a super high powered awesome bike you're just that much more likely to fuck yourself up, when the time comes. The inexpensive beater that requires lots of maintenance until you're experienced is the way to go, whether it's a bike, car, girlfriend, or what have you.
Congrats. Here's a tip- don't try moving it around standing next to it, always be standing over it in the seat. Otherwise, you'll drop it about 4 times your first month while walking it around the parking lot.
The little 250 buggers in the class are a lot lighter than a 'real' bike.
