Actually, I thought about it some more and realized that back in the 40's and 50's, there was a huge anti-japanese sentiment in the US from their conflict with Japan in WWII. Disliked had a nice bit of racist American history for us. Internment camps? Yea, I guess there was quite a bit of racial discrimination against the Japanese back then.

I guess that's why there's such a sensitivity. However, I still don't think Jap is bad, myself. Jap and Jew are both abbreviations for longer words, and by themselves, I don't see how they are derrogations.

Japs is a shortform for Japanese, and is not racist.

Jap-o is more racist in my mind, but you'd even have a hard time convincing me that thats not ok.

It really just depends on who you're talking to and if they take offense to it, if my white friend calls my black friend a "n*gger" and my black friend doesn't take the slightest offence to it, then I don't see a problem.
