It depends. For the most spart, on a V4 you'll get 20-30 MPG and V8's, like 15-20. Adding a good air intake, headers, and hi-flow cat will proBABLY Get you a guaranteed 20, though.

Forgive him, he assumes all engines are V's. Most Honda owners do because they don't know shit about cars. He means I4. And it all depends on how you drive and maintain your car. If you nail the pedal at every stoplight your fuel economy's gonna suck. If you let sludge and shit build up, or if you don't check/change/clean your air filter on schedule, your fuel economy's gonna suck. That's true whether you've got 10 cylinders of Dodge Viper power or 4 cylinders of brutal Ford Escort fury.

good job ph. way to tell him that V4s dont exist in cars. closest thing to that you'll see on the streets are the Vtwins harleys use.

most likely however, when you compare a i4 powered car with a v8 powered car, the i4 will have better MPG cuz it depends on alot of things, one of the more important things being the weight of the car.

If the cylinders were the same size, each cylinder only has to provide 1/8 the power instead of 1/4. Ideally, it would be about the same gas but smoother running b/c of 8 smaller pulses instead of 4 per 720 degrees.

V-8 generally have more displacement and are optimized more for power/speed rather than gas mileage. Add to that more moving parts and you generally have much worse gas mileage.

None of you know shit about cars...
Gas mileage depends on many, many factors, just a few have been pointed out like ‘the way you drive’. But variables like the weight of the car, the drag coefficient of its design, the efficiency of the engine, and the gear ratio of the drive train are some of the more important ones.

How nice of you to talk down on all of us for trying to keep it simple, Eph. Fuck you. Seriously.

The main thing when stepping up, and I speak from experience here, is the increase in power when going from I-4 to V-8. It's tempting to want to abuse that power every chance you get, and that abuse translates to shitty fuel economy. As the asshole said above there are other factors, but if you don't drive it like you're running from the cops the fuel economy difference in I-4's and V-8's is generally negligible.

eph, i think ph and i know just as much if not more about cars than you. obviously we are trying to keep it simple for someone who doesnt even know about mileage differences.

so let's keep it as simple as possible

                          HIGHER RPM=USE MORE GAS
                          RIGHT PEDAL = GAS

PH, cut me some slack, I was fucking messing with you. My reply was actually in response to your post, which I felt was a bit condescending. (Note, not over the top, just a bit.) SO I thought I would mess with you.

I have only restored 8-9 older (1950's) cars, including one that scored 387 points out of a possible 400 in a National Meet with 8000 cars completing. Took me 4 years to do that restoration. For a period of 15 years, my wife and I daily drivers were cars from the 1950's, no modern iron at all. Obviously I had to know something about cars since you don't find many people who know much about cars from this era.
As for modern cars, my wife now drive little import I bought new in 1996. A black on black Integra GSR that now has only 45k miles on it. It is very clean, mint condition.
As such, I have experience and rebuilt flat head 6's, V-8s and 4 bangers. I keep cars in basically original condition b/c that is the way I am. I have little experience in modifying cars, something that I am sure you guys might have.

It was my bad that I didn’t add a smiley or something in my original post. I was at work and wanted to get home, but sorry for not making it clear that I was messing with you.

My bad, dude, I've just been edgy today.

It was a basic question, so I figured I'd give a basic answer. He doesn't seem interested in gear ratios or aerodynamics, and even if he is there's only so much he can do about that. If he keeps the RPM's down his fuel mileage in most modern V-8 powered cars should be comparable with that of an I-4.
