It's called not driving or car pooling... Ride a bike? Schedule a day off of work...
Apparently bicycle sales have skyrocketed since the rise in oil prices. Incidentally, its not just the fuel industry, plastics and such are also made from crude oil, prices expected to rise soon.
Yes because people who work and have to commute for 2 hours every day can ride a bike, not drive, or just call in sick one day because they don't want to drive.
It depends on how much of that commuting is through heavy traffic: riding a bicycle may even get them to work faster. Or they could just get up earlier, or take public transport, or car pool. Sometimes you just have to drive though: say if you have equipment or something that you can't put in a backpack.

Wasn't wasted time... It's nice to get out sometimes and just walk, instead of spending it all on playing this game or something such as that...

            Hmm..

Say the average for filling up most gas tanks is around $15 to $25 dollars...

Say 500 people don't buy gas for that day and don't waste any gas, for a whole day...

            500 x $15 = $7,500
            500 x $25 = $12,500

            Half of $7,500 is $3,750
            Half of $12,500 is $6,250

Add the two together and you get $10,000

And that would be the average loss of currency the petroleum companies and government would lose from just 500 people, let alone, 5,000,000 people...

It'll be worth it... If not for that, do it for mother nature *tear*...

Doing it for one day wouldn't do anything other than make the profit chart have one sharp downward spike. People aren't going to lessen the amount of gas they buy even if they do go along with this one-day thing.

im just being picky here and not that it matters, but the average cost for filling up your tank is more like $30 to $50

Not buying gas on just one day won't have much of an effect. There would be no "net loss" because people would not be purchasing less gas.

If Americans made changes in their gas consumption, that might make a difference.

Everything is going to cost more because of the rising price of gas, food, clothing, electronics, everything. A huge amount of stuff is transported to stores using trucks, and when the companies need to pay more for their truck's gas, they're going to raise prices of the goods being shipped.

You're missing the point here people. This isn't just about reducing the gas companie's profits for one single day. It's the symbolism behind it. This is a form of protest. Lots of groups often set up shop outside a company to protest them, (for example, PETA showing up outside a fashion company that uses fur), but they don't expect the company to change that very day, nor do they plan on protesting them every day until they do. It's about bringing awareness to their message. Look at this thread for example; people are already talking about the issue and it isn't even September 3 yet.

First of all, it won't work. Second of all, it won't lower gas prices because the oil drilling companies still sold their gas to suppliers. Third of all, the USA isn't the only nation who purchases gas and I doubt all the Asians who just got cars are going to give a shit.

Edit: But for the sake of fun, I won't buy gas (not that I ever do, not until my car breaks down)

In Sweden gas costs about $1.57 per litre. Stop whining motherfuckas.
