When the city was founded it was about 6-9ft. higher than it is today.

A mere google search clears this up.
    http://www.neworleanscvb.com/static/...ubsectionID/0/

"In 1718, when Sieur de la Bienville founded a strategic port city five feet below sea level near the juncture of the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico, it had to be reclaimed from a swamp. The new city, or ville, was named La Nouvelle Orléans for Philippe, Duc d’Orléans, and centered around the Place d’Armes (later known as Jackson Square). It was confined to the area we now call the French Quarter or Vieux Carré (Old Square)."

Stabwound did not wish death to them because they were under sea level, he just pointed out that they should have gotten the fuck out when a HURRICANE WAS COMING.

5 feet below sea level's nice, but any city sitting on the coast and ALSO bordering a lake is gonna get their shit kicked in. so you're all wrong.

We got the first wave of students today. Alot of them come from Ben Franklin, the former #1 school in Louisiana - now we have that distinction, up from #2.

I saw my dad arming up - zipping his bodyarmor, and loading his shotgun, glock and (giant) revolver. I asked him what's up, apparently he's about to go on an almost Assault-on-Precint-13-esque mission: prisoners are stranded in random buildings and interstates, and cops - even probation officers like my dad - are going down there on emergency rescue/transfer missions.

Anyways, I haven't been reading the thread, but from what I am reading, this is pretty much a pissfight of people trying to prove that hurricanes are fatal and the people should have left. Well, they DID leave, or as many as possible, some people were literally trapped in new orleans. Others just didn't expect the carnage - Nawlins HAS been hit before - and saw no reason to leave. Anyways, when you think about it, the relative ratio of deaths to gross amount of people who survived is quite small.

Anyways, looking back I see a few "why did they build a city below seawater"...posts. Well, that's not the question, once again, it's a question of where. If New Orleans was in the middle of montana, shit wouldn't happen, it's more of a "why did they build it near the coast" question, and the answer: "because it's vital". New Orleans DIRECTLY supplies airports, so now I think 2 or 3 major airports (Atlanta, DFW, etc) are shceduled to run out of fuel by tomorrow, because they have pipelines straight from nawlins. It was also a major port city for years, and perhaps still is.

Anyways tone, perhaps all your arguments would better apply to the Tsunami which killed what, 150k people?

        Sep 1 1923
A 7.9 magnitude earthquake strikes the cities of Tokyo and Yokohama at noon. Almost 142,000 people are killed by falling building or in the resulting fires. Yokohama suffers 88 separate blazes, which rage unabated for two days. In all, 694,000 homes are destroyed, leaving 1.5 million survivors homeless.
golly, those dumb japs, they should have left tokyo and never come back, it was OBVIOUS that they lived in the ring of fire and they KNEW earthquakes were going to happen

I think I saw on the news that Gulfport Mississippi got hit the hardest.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

Biloxi got the worst of it, IMHO.

              The whole town was leveled.

                Jerome, quick question:

Does your dad have a .50 Cal Pistol?

I fired one at my friends farm yesterday and I flew about 2 feet back and landed straight on my ass.

"Well that's what they get for building a city below sea level."

You can say that till your ass bleeds but it's not true.

Hurricanes come all the time and people don't evacuate so that was a stupid statement too. However, I watched all 12 hours up until it hit, and I have to be honest, if I were there, I would have left. I mean, 190mph gusts of winds in the ocean? WTF NO. While many people stayed and had the means to leave, there is only slightly less compassion. Maybe you don't realize the poverty rate in NOLA. Many, many people didn't have the means. Many people are committing crimes now...so that they can go to jail? And get a hot meal? Showers? Shelter? ANY prison would be better than being stranded in New Orleans, and being raped in the Superdome (that happened).

And what the fuck is FEMA? They spend millions training for situations of disaster. Now congress will TRICKLE into session (from their summer break) so that they can approve $10 billion in aid. IT COSTS FEMA $500 MILLION A DAY TO PROVIDE ASSISTANT.

Take a second and think where all that money is. Budget cuts? Iraq?

Either way. What is Homeland Security? People are dying, dead bodies floating down the dater. Cholera and typhoid fever looming. The newscasters, all I hear is,

"Why is it taking so long to get supplies, John?"
                  "I don't know, Bob."
"What's the body count down there sherrif"
"We don't know because we are too busy taking care of our own asses to collect bodies"

I swear if one more newscaster shooting on location asks that question again.

I heard on the news today that military troops will arrive tomorrow. TOMORROW. WHY HAS IT TAKEN THIS LONG. WHY ARE PEOPLE STARVING AND DYING OF THIRST. IT HAS BEEN 4 DAYS. We didn't need military troops, martial law, automatic weapons. We NEEDED leadership.

Do you hear the president's lack of empathy? I for one am ashamed.

As mad as I am about the situation, I am more angry at the profiteers, sites like helpkatrina.com opened. They stole money. Thugs are shooting at RESCUE BOATS AND RESCUE HELICOPTERS. I am sometimes even more angry at people like Stabwound, who know nothing of compassion and exist to prove to me that there are heartless people in the world, irresponsible people of the world. Then again I do have to step back and realize the average age in this community, and thus the average correlating level of antagonism and immaturity.

                    http://zangla.ytmnd.com/

President is too busy getting back from his vacation to really rush into action, not like he's a clear thinker under pressure anyway. Add that on to the fact that he probably is not in a hurry to help all the minorities and low-income white people in New Orleans and you have yourself a hotbed for violence and desperation.

EDIT: I don't know him personally but I've seen stabwound post over the years that I've been here, and he doesn't seem like the heartless bastard you're making him out to be. He's not laughing at their plight, he's just saying that a good number of the stubborn people that refused to leave, shouldn't really complain too much.

Were some people unable to leave due to lack of funds/other conditions?
                    Yes.
Do I think that Stabwound is making fun of these people, or specifically anyone who got hurt or lost loved ones due to the hurricane? Nope.

I've never seen him that mean either. However what he meant to say and what he said are two different things. <_<

new orleans is now destroyed and anyone who stayed took a big risk with their life. the quote of me talking about the people who thought the storm was no big deal was true. there were people who knew nothing of the possibilites of levees breaking and the city being under water. no one in the right mind would stay unless they wished for death. also those quotes were from when so many were sure it would take a direct cat 5 hit with 160 and above substained winds, it turned out it weakened and turned a little eastward at the last minute so to speak. 2 levees busted anyway and the city is now basically destroyed.

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco said “miles and miles of homes“ were under water.

MORE LEVEE BREACKES EXPECTED; 110 DEAD IN TWO MISSISSIPPI COUNTIES ALONE; MILES OF COASTLINE OF THE US NOW UNDER WATER:

                        Islands of rooftops
That was made tough enough by the vast expanse of floodwaters in coastal areas that took an eight-hour pounding from Katrina’s howling winds and up to 15 inches of rainfall. From the air, neighborhood after neighborhood looked like nothing but islands of rooftops surrounded by swirling, tea-colored water
So I'd guess that he was saying you get floods, if you build a city under sea level, and get hit by a huge storm.
