Hatred brings the world closer together.
    And P H is a refined/Pure form of Hatred, so you're saying P H for world leader?

I know a reasonable amount of goths, but they're mostly the fun loving sort. Drinking, doing silly things, etc. Not that different from most students. Sure some of them suck, but the same is true for most people. They are, however, heavily against religion/christianity in particular, but I don't really mind.
I knew a gothlike guy in highschool, he was pretty cool, not depressed as far as I could tell, I suppose he was into it because he liked the black/death/leather stuff.
The goth movement, as it is, isn't very strong over here.

Closest thing you could call an artist category at my school are the hardcore anime fans that constantly go to conventions and sit in the hallways playing magic the gathering. Lot's of people think it's cool to act like a gangster and dress like one, just like lots of people think it's cool to dress like a goth, emo scene kid, punk, jock, prep , etc etc. The list goes on.

And when are jocks made fun of? They're portrayed as idiots all the time, I don't see why it's such a big deal that these people are talking about goths.
It just seems that "goths" now are becoming the new "nerd" in terms of how badly they are picked on and made fun of and I really don't see why. The big I guess is probably a bigger issue like, why the hell do people have to use other people as a beating post for their egos to feel better?

And I guess I miss categorized myself, I was an artist in school, it's what I was known as being, but I never followed like, a certain "crowd". I had friends who were jocks, goths, nerds, other artists, preppies, "sluts"(people called her a slut just because everyone called her a slut, as far as I knew she had never been with anyone), druggies, Christians, you name it I was probably friends or at least on good terms with them.

So why do people have to take it upon themselves to bash others? Human nature yeah... guess it was really a rhetorical(sp?) question.

I've found that all people, no matter which 'group' they belong to, are generally ok. The splitting into stereotyped groups is just silly. But it does have its uses, ie helps people find people with similar interests etc.
And stereotype bashing also sucks, but people will still do it to some extent.

Wow SpiderMage, you are a complete idiot, comparing Edgar Allan Poe's genius to the shallowness of a modern day Goth. Whther its all in their head, or they have bipolar, they choose their own perspective on life.

Not all modern day goths are shallow. You might realize this if you didn't bash them so. They may not be Poe quality, but the example given was goth "in general", I thought that was pretty clear. Point is, let them be the way they are, just because you think their music is "shitty" doesn't exactly make your music any better. If they cut themselves, that's an unfortunate and stupid thing to do, but it's of no matter to you, so let them do it(unless you care about them and thus want to stop them), and if they want to write poetry about dying, you must bash them for it why?

I thought 'artist category' means that you're gay?

I'm with Spidermage on this one. Goths that I know, at least, aren't shallow. Highly opinionated, sure. But not shallow. And as for choosing their own perspective on life... sure, they choose to wear black and all that, they choose to act how they act. But thats no reason to condemn them, because they do that. Perhaps its the best lifestyle for them.
[quote]having said this, wearing heavy black clothing regardless of temperature, black lipstick, and hate symbols is just retarded, and has got nothing to do with being depressed, and 60% to do with getting attention IMHO (the other 40% being hard for me to pin down in writing).[quote]
Exactly, its an image thing. They like the image, so they do it. Although not all are so stupid as to wear a trenchcoat 24/7.

BTW Torn, what age group of goths are you talking about? Teenage? Because I agree, teen goths are not the deepest people you could meet. The ones I know are all over 19/20 years

So question then... poetry and movie genius aside... would Tim Burton and Poe be the "poster child" of the goth category... what exactly makes the stereotype?

When I was a bit younger, my friends used to hang out with goths in our school, now, I remember the first time I joined my friends to just hang out with them, and as I was uneducated about these people and they way they dressed, I didn't know what to expect, they looked quite vicious and rough so I was quite wary of them, but every single one of them turned out to be a really nice, warm person onceI started talking to them. But, what I noticed is that they are really hostile around people they don't know but really welcoming to the ones they do. This confused me because I believe that you should not make judgements on other people if you do not know them.

Then, I thought back to when I was first meeting them, it was I who judged them based on their appearance. I didn't know what to expect from them because of the way they dressed? I was wary of them because in my eyes they dressed like vicious people? I guess we all subconsciously judge people because its human nature to do so.

They complain about being judged on the way they look, yet they assume you're not like them by the way you look. What do you expect when you're acting all depressed and pissed off around people you don't know? You're just going to get the cold shoulder.

Does the appearance really go with the way they feel inside or are they doing it to make a show and be different?
