So why are "gangstas" and skaters ok but goths aren't?

Some people unfortunately, seem to be naturally depressed people, that's just how their personality was molded and how it turned out or they have a different outlook on life by thinking everything is complete shit, which it's not hard to blame them because half the time, if not more, life is shit.

And it's kind of funny... why do people make fun of goths around them so much, yet so many love goths or admire them for what they've done. Two perfect examples: Edgar Allan Poe and Tim Burton. People from all walks of life and all sterotypical classes love the movies of Tim Burton, and his movies are gothic. Poe is revered as one of the best poets in history, and he was "goth".

When you say "crazy" or "weird" those two words are just different ways to say "I don't understand/I don't want to understand". The swastika girl is a bit much, but great way to be accepting Panda. Point is, they have their outlook on life, which can be bleak, morbid, depressing, etc, but it's their outlook, sometimes it's just a phase and sometimes it's who they really are, so leave them alone if you have no desire to understand why they have such a bad outlook on life.

One last thing, there's 3 types of goths usually(I hate to categorize them though )
1: Fashion goth - Basically only "goth" in what they wear and/or listen to. They could be the happiest person on the planet, but if their favorite color is black, 10:1 everyone will rag on them for being "goth".
2: Phase goth - Usually teenagers who are just growing up and happen to have grown into, for the moment, the darker personality.
3: Real goth - Real goths are just like any other real "category"(Lord I hate having to categorize people, but it's probably the only way you understand). Just like a "real skater" or "real gangster", it's who they are and they don't really give a damn what you think of them. It's their life and it's who they are, they don't like the world and it's not hard to understand why and they are pescimists(sp?) and have a more morbid outlook.

I think I rambled away from my main point but eh.. oh well. Maybe I am just more understanding of "goths" because my girlfriend is "goth", so 've learned to be understanding and supportive. Meh, whatever, think what you people want, no internet forum is going to change how much people hate each other for no reason anyway.

Lol gangsters are ok? Where have you been to have missed the past 10 years of gangster/thug jokes popping up in movies, commercials and tv? Skaters/surfers were made fun of back in the day for being long-haired idiots that weren't going to get anywhere in life. You have to realize that for every person that makes fun of whatever life style, there is one person who lives it. No need to get uppity or give us dictionary definitions on the specific types of goths, Spidermage- most here don't mean any harm. Think of it like middle-school/highschool , everyone gets made fun of eventually.

I don't really want to say hatred, more like some people cope with their insecurities by making fun of others. Your own problems don't seem as bad if Jim the goth or Tansy the bubbly cheerleader is there to focus on, eh?

They talk about being non-conformists, but they are the people who really aren't non-conformists are those asian kids who spend all their time in the library. Kids who are goth's probably have got problems of their own, and the only way they can express it is with black stuff. Anti-depressants won't work on them either, they make you like 10 cups of coffee. They'll probably grow out if it. I've never seen a goth over 20 who isn't fun loving, in my whole entire life.

Well, there are numerous amounts of people in the world who, for whatever reason, are depressed, and no one "chooses" to be depressed. It's not that uncommon and it's an important issue, which often isn't easy to fix. Telling someone who is depressed to cheer up is like telling an insomniac to just get some sleep.

...having said this, wearing heavy black clothing regardless of temperature, black lipstick, and hate symbols is just retarded, and has got nothing to do with being depressed, and 60% to do with getting attention IMHO (the other 40% being hard for me to pin down in writing).

Actually, I take that back, the term "retarded" is incorrect, that just implies that you're a few years behind others in learning ability. Some other word should be substituted like "meaningless" or "dumb" :P

There's this crazy goth girl at my school that is really really weird. She's just becoming more and more gothic every year and now she's wearing black lipstick and stuff, and it's just weird. So anyway, the other day she wore tons of swastikas and stuff to school. She had a Nazi flag, tons of patches, just lots of it. So my friend goes over and beats her up because our best friend is Jewish. </random story>

Artist category? You mean goth? Trust me, you were made fun of. Just because your head wasn't dunked in a toilet doesn't mean at some point in time, some kid made fun of you at school. There is no " artist category ", that I know of, and I go to an art school. Closest thing you could call an artist category at my school are the hardcore anime fans that constantly go to conventions and sit in the hallways playing magic the gathering. Lot's of people think it's cool to act like a gangster and dress like one, just like lots of people think it's cool to dress like a goth, emo scene kid, punk, jock, prep , etc etc. The list goes on.

And when are jocks made fun of? They're portrayed as idiots all the time, I don't see why it's such a big deal that these people are talking about goths.
