So we'll run out of names in about 63,751.25 years. Those damn greek letters are going to have to wait. Besides, Hurricane Lamda or Eta isn't as user friendly.

They should just do what they do in Japan and name them by number. In Japan it's 'Typhoon #14', 'Typhoon #15' and so on. Then again Americans like names.

he got confused and combined two things. while its true that they assign 26 names a year, and when those run out they go onto the greek letter system (alpha, beta) telcat didnt make much sense when she said that since they retire the storm names of really bad storms, that we will run out soon.

The national weather service has a set list of names it can use for hurricanes each year. In the rare event that they exhaust all the names on the list, they use the greek alphabet...or greek names...something greek. I don't remember exactly.

It just so turns out that this hurricane season is the aforementioned "rare event". They only have 4 names left on the list with 2 months of hurricane season still left in the atlantic.
