  • Nanotube Elevator to Outter Space (21,700 miles high)

in the future, nearer than previously thought, there will be a 35,000 kilometer high elevator built from the surface of earth to deep in geosynchronous orbit. this will allow for the more efficient overcomming of gravity to transport to and from space. what makes it possible is a material made out of carbon nanotubes 50 times stronger than steel and well within specs to make it possible.

i believe we will also go back to the moon and mine helium 3 for clean nuclear fusion reactors.

here is a *NEW* 2 page article

    http://www.space.com/businesstechnol..._020327-1.html

and nasa on the space elevator (this artcle is wrong about how long before it will be built though):

Building a base and launching point on the moon would be better. More efficent power sources will be devloped in the future.

The amount of materials, money and time to build it could be better spent on social and real world issues or just something more advanced then a freaking huge elevator so assholes can save a little $ to litter Earth's orbit. Between terrorism and global warning and the current state of world economies I think it's a pretty poor idea to even consider this.

Edit: Also Tone, there are a lot of free Blog sites out there, I think you should consider picking up and moving on from here. I'll even find some free ones for you if you want.

      Current mood: thoughtful.
Current music: johan - total satanic deathfuck techno (btw if you play this song at 61% speed, turn it backwards and add a slight echo with 0.5 second delay you can hear kylie minogue say "i dyked out with mandy moore", 100% true).

      dear LJ,
sigh. why do those kids on the TW forums resent me so much? all i want is to fit in, and they push me away. i'm so sick of it. i can't find any more room on my arms to cut without going over any scars. i'm tired of living like this. i want to die.

my problem is this. if i die aliens will kidnap my body and use it as part of "project 67". you can read about that here. i don't want to be a part of project 67. god, please take this pain away.

mom sold her car today. i begged her to let me have it, but she said no because i was spending too much time locked in a dark room mumbling latin phrases to myself. i don't think i am. i was going to add a chrome IL and a chrome TI to the car's model name on the back. it's a Chevy Lumina, so i'd be driving a chevy illuminati. pretty cool, huh? maybe then the aliens will take notice of me and get me out of this hellhole.

      please save me,
      t0ne

Disagree strongly with that. The elevator would be a lot better, just I think tone is overly optimistic about how soon it can be done

Leave Tone alone, he's not starting any arguments.

I started a thread on the Sony Ericsson W800, I don't see much of a difference between the types of threads.

Anyways, my only concern is that high up in the earth's atmosphere, there a few little winds called jet streams. Asides from the jet streams, how would weather play a factor in the deterioation of the elevator?

In space too, there are hundreds of millions tiny objects hurtling through space at ridiculously painful speeds. So what if nanocarbon tubes are the strongest material as of right now on Earth? How will they fare in space, constantly being pummelled by extraterrestrial rocks made of "Stupidium"?

Also, where would the location of the base be? If I remember correctly, the Earth rotates on its axis quite a bit (15 degrees each hour), so a single line between some point on the equator and the moon would essentially snap.

Oh how I hate being the pessimist.
            boo...

I mean for space exploration it would be better. For comerial use and anyone with 200 or so dollars to waste, yeah it would be bigger then disney world but is that what taxes and the intrest of an entire country and world should be? Im just saying the use of it for a good 3-4 hundred years will be comerial, build it if and when its needed. Currently the moon base idea is better to me for what we need to do out there and yeah my children's children's children's....... grand children will live to see it built, shortly there after the sun will go nova :P.

He treats this forum like it's his personal blog, FFS look at his sig and didn't he say he was leaving? THIS IS ATTENTION WHORING, IS EVERYONE BLIND HERE?

He ignores facts and reality when confronted with both, shows a disgusting hatred for all forms of faith and tolerance and acts like hes enlightening us with his 2 sentence paraphrased captions and links (showing a disgracful amount of understand, knowledge and respect for everyone here aswell) which almost always is some fucking retard site that takes all the sense and thinking right the fuck out of discussions. Stop defending him and his bullshit.

Great you like science, GOTO a forum that deals with it. Tell me can you explain the process in which that material is created Tone? can you tell us what stresses the sturcture would face? can you even tell us what economic effect it would have? Im into science too but I dont take the smallest intrest in it. You have a brain, start using it to read some books and not tinfoil and Nasa news sites. I dont bring shit here I dont understand.

I feel bad for whoever is on the Earth at that time. I wouldn't say that I would enjoy being consumed by the sun, or being broiled before the sun reached us. Ouch

I don't mean to start arguing with you personally, Kolar, but if you claim that Tone is attention whoring, then I'll assert that you're bullying.

Well, at least Tone says that he only posts once a week, right? Thursdays? Just avoid the forums then :P

PH you hate t0ne so much that there's now a little t0ne inside of you..
Seriously, I never got why anyone hates t0ne as much as u do. These are just forums, it's not some sort of sacred place. Characters like t0ne are a bit different, not that I ever agree with his opinions since they're mostly based on complete shite, but ocassionally he does bring good matter for a 'general discussion' and if not it's still a good laugh (just pretend he's being really sarcastic). Without people like t0ne you'd just have a bunch of forumwhores circlejerking around every day saying how glad they are that one person is now gone.. Hence there's a little of t0ne inside of you haters..

Sci-fi stories that use this kind of launching platform never mention terrorists. Presumably they've got better anti-terrorist defences?
I've heard of some sort of project that would need to build the launching tip thingy either on Mount Kiliminjaro (sp?) or mt (fuji, I think, in india or something???) in order to be effecient enough.
Since America seems to be the only superpower capable of putting such an investment in such a large space program, and both of these locations are in Africa and Asia resepctivly, I doubt that it'll be built in the near future.
20, 30- years is quite optimistic, in my opinion.

If he hadn't run his credibility so far into the ground things might be different. Go read one of his threads and look at how he dodges or flames people who ask questions or doubt him. Enough said.

Pretty much what PH said. If he hadn't already proven himself to be an attention whore, and it was Sleepy or Conc who was posting this stuff, it would be a totally different story.

I've seen the nanotube idea on one of the learning channels (TLC, Disc, etc.), but that doesn't mean that I have forgotten all the Art Bell bullshit that Tone has tried to rile people up with.

He was a troll before his ban, and what...now he gets a clean slate and nobody remembers what he's really like? Jesus, some of us have short memories.

So if Izor comes in and is nice for 2 posts in a row, people forget he's a racist troll?
