I think those scams do their thing with combinations of group hypnotism (and/or mass hysteria) putting people in a suggestive state. Not to belittle your experience, though.
Although, if you've ever passed out (I have low blood pressure that sometimes drops the blood pressure to my brain drastically: It made me faint once) waking up after it is a very surreal experience. Its like dying, and coming back to life, and doesn't need anyone to pray for you. Theres a momentary peroid where everything is happy. And then I remember where I am.
I imagine its something like doing Nos, or other drugs that deprive your brain of oxygen. But, having never done them, I wouldn't know.
