  • a WNBA player a lesbian? NO WAY!

So, I was surfing ESPN.com doin fantasy stuff, and I came across this here article. Apparently Sheryl Swoops (the only WNBA player I know of, other than Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird, both seattle players) just came out of the closet. Apparently this is big news, because a whole crapload of young girls look up to her, being that Ms. Swoops is a WNBA MVP as well as the first woman to ever dunk. You think she's gonna get made fun of for this?

I thought Lisa Leslie was the first to dunk in a game. Anyway, doesn't matter, nobody cares about WNBA---which is exactly why it doesnt' matter she came out. Coming out in the WNBA is pretty much just like coming out irl. Except about 3 more people pay attention.

But her heart seems to be in the right place, although it might seem that she's trying to get her dead sport some national attention. Boy, would that be a cynical thought.

im too lazy to find the exact quote but she says something like
"its wrong that people watch the wnba and talk about how the players are gay, why dont they watch the nba or nfl and talk about that? there are at least as many straight women as gay in the wnba"
first of all, people say that all the time about the players on the opposing team (heh), but second of all, if all you can guarantee is 50% straight, no kidding people talk about how the athletes are gay, thats a ridiculous amount over the national average. one would imagine that even if everyone in the nba and nfl came out, they would have significantly less gay people than the average, as i wouldnt think too many gay people would think it worth it to tough out years of playing college and high school football with a bunch of homophobes just for a CHANCE to go pro.
i wouldnt care if they were all lesbians, if the wnba could provide me a game that was 75% as good as the nba (which i would say is 50% as good as college bb), i might watch it. watching a game with the final score 47-28 just doesnt appeal to me whatsoever.

          Face,

Yea, I thought the same thing about the 50/50 gay/straight ratio. That's a huge percentage above the national average.

And I agree that the reason why nobody watches the game has nothing to do with the gay rumors. . it's because the quality sucks. Who enjoys watching a bunch of unforced turnovers? Terrible ball handling skills, and bad passes, etc. And there's no explosiveness like in the men's game.

Most of the players around the league already know I'm gay, and I do feel like there's a sisterhood among lesbian players. We know we're not going to get the support from a lot of other people. But the talk about the WNBA being full of lesbians is not true. I mean, there are as many straight women in the league as there are gay.

What really irritates me is when people talk about football, baseball and the NBA, you don't hear all of this talk about the gay guys playing. But when you talk about the WNBA, then it becomes an issue. Sexuality and gender don't change anyone's performance on the court.

Women play just as hard as guys do. We're just as competitive. We're just as intense. There are so many other issues to discuss besides rumors about the WNBA being full of lesbians. And I think that's why we don't get the type of fan support we deserve.

I don't know if a guy will have the courage to come out while he is still playing because of the whole male-ego thing. Male athletes of my caliber probably feel like they have a lot more to lose than gain. I don't agree with that.
