I'm going to university next year and was planning to go to Portsmouth (where ZeUs went) but I heard it was only about No. 77 in the Top 100 Universities in Britain.

    How does this rating work?

Do employers rate degrees from different universities higher than others? (obviously Oxford/Cambridge are exceptions)

If I go to university, is someone with the same degree who went to a university that is considered better (or rated higher, at least) more likely to get the same job?

I think the rating is based on factors including the percentage of students that pass and go onto higher education, I don't think an employer may choose someone over you for the university that you went to but rather what you studied (modules) in the course.

Im going to uni too next year :stuart:

The way i understand it to work is, you choose 6 universitys that you think you can get the grades to get on their course.
Then you receive offers, and view the unis, and the one you like the most you accept. If you get the grades for that uni you should be allowed to go, if you dont get the grades you go through clearence, to try and pick up a uni that will accept your grades.

My sister was close to going to Portsmouth, but as it has a relitively low UCAS points entrance for most courses, you wont have the brightest of students there, and employees will know this in the future.

SO far ive had an offer of a place from Sussex, but im hoping to go to Bath Uni as its the second best in the country for my subject. :cough: maths :cough:

I'm not sure if the British system works a bit different but here in America, the name on the degree makes a lot of difference. If you have a degree from Nebraska or Michigan State in mathematics or engineering, it won't mean the same as if you received it from CalTech or the Massachusettes Institute of Technology.

Just dont waste your money. If you dont know what you want to do, take a year off to figure it all out. (I didnt do this and I'm regretting it)
Once you figure out what you want to go with, run with it and enjoy.
(I didnt know exactly, I just knew I wanted to do something in Biology, but I didnt know exactly what. Now I get to take a year off to ponder on why my marks were so low... next year will be better )

anyways, good luck with your Uni.

go into residence (dormitory) your first year, too. great learning experience

i think staying home or doing uni in your hometown is a BAD idea. I did this and instead of college life it was more of an extension of high school, and it doesn't force you to get active on campus or make new friends on the smae level if you leave home.

employer would probably look at the rating of the school when they are hiring. I dont think you need to worry abou it too much though, just as long as the university you go to specializes in the field you are going to. I'm at Laurier in Canada for music. Its not the best university to go to(after looking at Maclean's university rankings, we are pretty good), But we have a very reputable music program, so hopefully employers will look at that instead. better then going to some #1 ranked school for music when they have a crappy music program

Its going to be at least 78 when I leave, probably about 79

The best new university is Oxford Brookes, its fantastic. I was there earlier in the week for a day days visiting someone and I fell in love with the town, its got so much culture. The whole town is built along one long road which has buses on it every 10 minutes and as its got another certain university in it its fiarly quiet on the chavs front. Plus its a really affluent area so its leafy and just generally fantastic. All her friends live in close proximity so you can't really beat it. I did not enjoy coming home to Pompey. All the houses look like castles, the whole place has that medieval feel to it

Hold on a second. Britain has about 60 million people and you have a list of the top 100 universities? Exactly how many universities are there in total? Canada has a population of 32 million and we have something like 40 universities in total, half of which I wouldn't consider worth going to unless your grades are horrid or you live nearby and can't afford to move.

I'm going to take a guess and say 350, including the colleges that call themselves unis.
