Ana shot Shannon, you see it from both the perspective of Sayid and Ana (The last 2 episodes, respectively).
My theory onto why the others haven't attacked the front sectioners is because the button is being pushed in the hatch. Now, how does this button prevent the others from attacking the front? I can't really tell, might be the security system, the black smoke, or something to do with the electromagnet, I don't know.
Now, how did I come to this theory that the button is stopping them from attacking?
Exhibit A: Walt was taken by the others in the sea. I know that the people on the boat were, infact, "others", because the writers confirmed that. Now, Walt appears to Shannon and says, backwards, "Don't push the button, the button is bad.".
Now, why is Walt talking backwards? Nobody knows, but I know that he can disappear and reappear like that, because "The others will only let you see them when they want you to." And Walt could be an 'other' now, or at least being used by them as bait. And for some reason, the others don't want that button to be pushed anymore.
Exhibit B: The problems on the island seem to have happened as a freak accident. The Swan Hatch started doing this protocol of pushing a button (typing in the numbers and hitting the execute key) every 108 minutes. And pressing this button seems to be the key to saving that hatch from some unknown force that can end the world, etc*. They've obviously been pushing the button for quite some time, so I think this whole "save the world" idea got lost down the line like that game of 'telephone'. The original button pressing was to probably handle the situation topside, which is why the doors say "quarantine" on the inside.... the topside was being quarantined.
So, in conclusion, with a large lack of conclusive evidence, I do believe that the button is the key to keeping the others at bay, at least for now. The next week (or more)'s episode might have an other attack while the button is being pressed, and at that point my theory will officially be debunked.DELETED

Damon Lindelof (executive writer of Lost) has been quoted with Carlton Cuse (other executive writer for Lost) as saying that we may never actually find out what the numbers mean. He actually said, that the numbers could mean nothing. All of it could just be one crazy coincidence.
Now personally, I think he's leading us on, and that the writers know exactly what they're gonna do with the numbers. But, if they don't do anything with them, I'm gonna be pissed. Coincidence my ass, write something better.
Also, Episode 3 of this Season explained a lot! Including how the polar bears got on the island.Originally posted by ToneWomen who smoke cigarettes are sexy, not repulsive. It depends on the number smoked. less is better

yes, there are 6 hatches on the island.
1. Psychology
2. Para-Psychology
3. Electro-Magnetism
4. Zooligy
5. Astronomy
6. Utopian Society
Which explains who the others are (Utopian Society...Remember when Goodwin said they only took those that were "good") and how the polar bears got on the island (Zooligy)Originally posted by ToneWomen who smoke cigarettes are sexy, not repulsive. It depends on the number smoked. less is better

Its frustrating to write these lines after every post^
I'd hope there would be another way..like some automatic system that fills them itself after every post.
