I have a 1st gen iPod. Today I went from really sad to really happy, and then ping ponged back and forth. This is what happened:
After being dropped, the poor machine displayed the hard drive fail signal for a while. Today while having it apart, I noticed that the hard drive ribbon seemed loose, and that while being a bitch, I might as well remove the mainboard and check it out. I did so. I disconnected the cable, and hooked it back up, and tried it again with the parts in hand. It worked perfectly. I was ecstatic.
I started to put it back together, and was putting the last screw in on the mainboard, when one slip ruins everything. A chip broke off from the mainboard. A couple of attempts to solder it back in place, that worked, then failed, then worked.. then failed, then worked, then got FUBAR later, I'm going to have to buy a new fucking mainboard to fix it.
I was so close. One slip, and WHAM. I got fucked.
Now I get to try and search for a reasonably priced mainboard for a 1st Gen iPod. Great eh? No, this isn't technical support, even though I wouldn't mind someone here saying they have access to a mainboard for sale cheap. It's just me blathering about what a shitty day one small slip up brings. Feel free to add your own.
