I really don't think you can say John Lennon and JFK achieved their current legendary statuses only by getting killed with grandeur. Who knows what they might've done if they hadn't been killed? And I think, I can't know of course, but I think that John Lennon would have moved more to the background over time, like most of the hippies (not meant in a degoratory term or anything like that). Of course not totally to the background, but people don't really achieve legend status after they are dead anyway. When someone dies thats the moment everyone goes like..
