    • Why don't you take your own advise, you obviously can't take it when someone out wits you, wich isn't that hard anyway. But all you do after someone proves you are wrong is throw a hissy fit... Grow up, you don't own the forums and I ain't shutting the fuck up because some little kid can't beat me with the words, now stay the fuck on topic.

Well face, I do think it kinda depends on how the USA is doing in a sport, if the USA team would reach the finals, you would def. see an increase in popularity. It happens everywhere, for example before Raymond van Barneveld won in Lakeside (the embassey back then) in what was it '98, no one outside a bar heard of darts in the Netherlands, but then he won, it was on tv and it got big, kids have dart boards at home. Hell I have a dart board at home. I don't really use it and I suck at it, but I got one. And right now, we are owning the english at their own game. Popularity nowdays depends on if you have someone or a team getting good results.

        • Let's see.. the topic is about the world cup draw, and thus the world cup, the whole Netherland, England, Germany argument was about the rivalry between the 2 football teams.. the world cup is football, it has to do with England, Germany and Netherlands.. so no I didn't go way off topic there, at all.

Listen to who? Who the fuck is Kitchen? The Scottish invented golf, and even that is questionable because we used to have a sport over here in the Netherlands where PERHAPS golf could have originated from, but as a fact, the scottish invented golf and not the English.

And who gives a shit who invented it, Darts, unlike most of the other sports, has ALWAYS been a English sport, last years you have been getting some Dutch guys coming in.. and now we owned you at your own sport. So I am not completely getting where you are going to.. but stop derealing topics to make mindless and overused insults at me.

            • if you guys dont stop ruining every topic with this fucking ridiculous argument i swear to god im going to fly to europe and punch you both in the face. i am 100% sure that nobody on these forums is reading what youre saying, its a miracle that i noticed that galleleo said something to me in the midst of the argument. please take the argument to pms, aim, or forums.pissingcontestforpeoplewhohaventgottentheir dickwetinalongtime.com. basically, anywhere but here.

anyway, americans would DEFINITELY get really excited if we made a run fo r the world cup but it would be because of the reason i wanted to see us win the world cup, not because we liked soccer more. the games/years after we lost a run, i dont think youd see a hell of a lot of increased viewership.

              • What I meant, is that is the USA does really good this WC, then you'll prob see an increase in people playing the sport, maybe it just starts with some kids buying a ball and playing the streets and not much more, and maybe it'll die out again until the next WC if the USA manages to good there again.

But I do think that there is a direct correlation between how good a sporter/team from a country is doing and the popularity of the sport after that, thus more people starting to play it and stuff.

I think when you look at it from both participating countries, I think the rivalry between Holland-Germany is bigger than England-Germany. I'll try to explain why, I don't have much time so I have to admit I didn't do much research on this. :P
First of all I have to admit in footbalmeetings the England-Germany has more history than the Holland-Germany. England and Germany have been battleing for the number one spot from the 30s onwards. For England their rivalry with the German Mannschaft isn't only based on football-moments, unlike their rivalry with Argentina (Hand of God moment) would be. For the Germans however I'm afraid it's not much more than a classic.
The world wars are the extra fuel to the rivalry from England with the Germans. However the WO II has left an a lot bigger impression on Holland than it has on England when it comes to having reasons to hate Germany. England was simply never occupied by the Nazis.
However it's pretty useless to bring up the WO II when it comes to looking at the rivalry from both sides, a good rivalry is felt by both parties. The WO II can't be brought up publicly if you want to be rivals with the Germans, it's because the Germans have an immense guiltfeeling over it. This was perfectly shown in the news a week ago when a Dutch guy produced thousands of orange (our national color) Nazi-helmets, which lead to fierce responses in both countries' press, it puts both parties at the same side really, which you don't want in a rivalry.
What I'm trying to say is, it doesn't really matter who feels more 'hate' towards the Germans when it comes to football, the English or the Dutch. Because we all know the English have proven throughout history to be very good at hating the continent and everything non-English, which probably is easier to do when you live on an island.. What matters is who do the Germans see as their main rivals. And then the answer I think is the Dutch; we're their direct neighbours and from the 70s on have lived through our football moments with a lot more fierce passion from both sides, while the England-Germany matchup has become more of a classic than a good rivalry from both sides..
But like I said, I didn't do much research on this one, I could be wrong, but I doubt it..
No I genuinely do hate the Germans

The sport is actually very popular amongst the kids in the States. It has private clubs as well as school sponsored teams. The problem is that it just will not carry over to the professional markets here in the States.

I had played in my youth for private clubs as well as school, but when I went to college, I became the spectator, plus I switched to playing Rugby.

Perhaps if sponsorship would take a larger part in making the sport more mainstream here in the States, it would take on a popular spot amongst the pro sports here.

TV and Commercial sponsorship have quite a bit to do with the exposure of all sports here in the States. Due to the lack of backing and it not being as big a business as other pro sports are here in the States, I cannot see it getting to a larger audience, regardless if the States do well in the WC.

It all boils down to TV ratings and how much the owners & sponsors will make off of it.

Just my opinion, yet after playing as a kid and watching it professionally back in the 70's. The Philadelphia Atoms where the champs here back in `72, until the NY Cosmos picked up Pele' and the Atoms traded all there Euro players for S. Americans and never won a game afterwards...it pretty much died out for a decade after 1975-76, only to go the route of being played indoors in an arena.

It will always be a popular sport amongst kids, yet it will not take off for financial reasons here. Just my take on it.
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

                      • Of course I don't have the full insides on popularity there and stuff.. but generally sports gain in popularity if one of their players or teams does really well in a big tourny..

problem is...regardless if the US does well...it still will not be aired on TV on a major network channel at a decent time. No money for the TV station and the Advertisers.

Hmm...was Pele' only popular in Brazil and the US? I thought he was da man in the 70's.

It will not gain in popularity in the Professional Sports here....no monies compared to the amount of advertising dollars made in Basketball, Hockey, Baseball, US Football. It's all about business. Think of it on the flip side...do you think Baseball would become extremely popular and become a mainstream sport on TV and played countrywide, if you had a team that played well? I think it may gain some popularity, but the monies to be made from it would not overcome the popular sports that bring the revenues required for TV as well as just being a mainstream sport.

People here do enjoy the sport....have played the sport and know quite a bit about it...but the enthusiasm that could be generated in making it a mainstream sport here will not work after the decades and decades of failures trying to make it popular in a pro level.

                          • Firstly, Pele is one of the best, if not THE best player ever. And I dare say the best because Pele could do it all, he could play as a goalie and compete with the best goalies in the world, he was strong with his head, he was strong with his feet, he saw the game, he knew the game. Football is more then just the game with the ball, there is a whole game wich is probably even a far more important part, without the ball. So yea, we know Pele. (omg, I almost wanted to say, but pele played for portugal, but that's eusebio.. man almost made a huge mistake there)

And actually, last year the WC baseball was in our country, and before that we won the EC baseball. And we reached semi's the WC baseball, wich was aired in total on tv, and I think, not sure, but I think that it has gained popularity with the youth 2, playingwise. But then again, we have ALOT less channels then you guys, and we only have 1 real channel for sports. I mean everything is on that channel, football (tho not the competition anymore), ice skating, baseball, hockey (normal hockey), tennis, etc. And all huge tournaments and events, are on there, and this year baseball was too, because 1 it was in the netherlands and 2 we were doing really well. Else you would probably just have had summaries in the evening. But I watched too, and I am not even a baseball fan.
