  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I recently saw this on dvd and I loved it.

I was wondering if anyone else, and the Brits liked it.

How was the humor though? Some of it I didn't understand because it was clearly british like the "bollocks" and the british poetry slam during the vogon torture scene, but as I watched it with the audio commentary, "bollocks" is apparently a really bad word. Oh bloody hell.

Some of the scenes they deleted were too violent and stupid. The director almost made this movie 10x worse by even shooting scenes that were out of character with the rest of the movie.

I'm happy with the finished product.

you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is

the film was disappointing, I enjoyed the books much, much more.

I never really liked how they did Zaphod's heads and Marvin never looked how I imagined. Prefect should be white with ginger hair. Dent, Trillian, Vogons, and Slatibartfast look how I imagined though.

Maybe if you haven't read the books you'd enjoy the film more, I dunno.

If you enjoyed the film that much, Blanke, then you'd really, really love the books!

edit: are they making The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe?

      Throughout time, there’s been
      crimes, throughout our history
But not as great, as the one of late, affecting you and me
Once a nation proud and free, and now we’re weeping sorrow’s tears
Tragedy’s approaching, it’s worse than all your fears

      Come on my countrymen
Come on and take a stand
Don’t let ‘em take away your land

      the Wenger bus is coming
and all the kids are running
      from London to Manchester

I loved the books too, but you also have to appreciate the movie. So they went a different direction with Ford--who cares? I thought Mos Def did a fantastic job. And I don't think Zaphod's heads were done well in the BBC version either.

I thought the movie was great if you could separate yourself from the book for a little bit. I think we all get a little too "this was different from the original" when books are translated to movies.

I agree on Mos Def - he did do quite well, but I like it when films mirror the books -- always annoys me when films change from the books.

I suppose Adams left a lot of description (e.g. Marvin, Zaphod) up to the reader, so I guess I can't complain. Agreed on the BBC version of Zaphod too, ha

I read the first book over the summer, and I actually have the "tome", the anthology that houses all 5 books. 5/6.

Anyways, the opening number was priceless.

I thought the book was fairly dry, but the movie was a somewhat accurate representation. I didn't expect the heart of gold to be so..well...sphere-ish. Maybe i just don't remember the details accurately enough, but yeah, I didn't like how they did zaphod's two heads. It inspired me to finish the rest of the novels.

"So, and thanks for all the fish"

Edit: I thought the hitchhiker entries were lovely.

            "oh bollocks'

I didn't picture Marvin to look like that, but he was funnier than I imagined.
I don't think I read it correctly my first time through.

Hmmm, the ending in the book is vastly different than the one in the movie.

Yeah, it was also a bit too romantic in the movies too.

Edit: this is taken from a bbc article:

"There was much speculation about who would play Arthur Dent, with Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carrey, Ben Affleck and even Bruce Willis said to be in the running."

that would not work well. Jim Carrey=zaphod would've been good though.

imo, the tv series was better than the film.

Yeah, but you also probably think that Dr. Who was fantastic. I don't enjoy the whole "strap a flashlight to someone's head and call him an alien" costuming thing. Call it personal preference.

having no previous knowledge from the books, i thought the movie was trying too hard to pull some comedic stuff.

Cool, I haven't seen the movie or read the book, but now that I've skimmed this thread I think I'm going to feel ok with renting the DVD then reading the book down the road.

Regarding MosDef...that guy is seriously talented. If anyone saw Something The Lord Made on HBO, you know what I'm talking about. He's a great poet/rapper/artist/actor. The guy is brimming with skill.

Books are always better than the movies. (There might be a few exceptions though, but basically, books are better)

Of course the books are best but having seen it first, I'm more partial to the BBC version than the film. In all honesty though, there wasn't much -wrong- with the movie except Zaphod's heads. If they had kept it like the BBC version (side by side) and actually made them both personable then it would have been better. The BBC version was made in crude times though so they didn't have much in the way of special effects.

Is it me or is there a high correlation between those who have read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and those who are nerds?

The movie is okey, I haven't read the book and don't intend too.

P.S. the aliens in the the movie looked stupid and lack of imagination.
