  • UK/Ireland sports question

I see many discuss football (not U.S. version) as well as compare it to being exciting and all. I like it as well....was luck to have seen Pele' play yrs and yrs or should I just say decades ago, when he played for the NY Cosmos.

My question is...how many of you watch Hurling? Is there much interest in this sport? We have a local pub that airs the games here and I love it personally. Wish they would show it in more pubs or just on satellite here locally.

But in watching this & rugby for many years, I am suprised it was not mentioned as one of the favored sports. How is this sport looked at in the UK? Not to sound like an idiot on this subject, yet nobody mentions this sport. Is this only an Irish sport? or is it aired on TV as well as played in other areas of the UK?

Only thing close to this here in the States, but yet I hate to compare them, is Lacrosse. Mens lacrosse is the fastest growing High School and NCAA College Sport here in the States. College level is alot of fun to watch. Once it goes Pro here unfortunately, it drops in it's level of respect.

Hah.. I was like lacrosse? how can you compare that with lacrosse.. but I was thinking of Curling.. I have heard about hurling.. tho I can't remember what it exactly is.

On a side note: If the USA team manages to do well this World Cup in Germany, you'll be seeing an increase on football interest in America too.

Its pretty much an Irish only sport.

Don't think many in England would have even heard of it unless the've an Irish connection :P

I've watched it on the T.V. and my cousins played it but most of them prefered Gaelic Football (they just call it football) but i went to different schools so i played football and rugby and i like football (soccer) the best lol confusing?

Yeah Hurling is a pretty good sport, different to most. I wouldn't fancy playing it though as those bats are swung at head height >< I don't follow it but if a local team got into the final or i got a girlfreind who was into it i'd watch it and could easliy get into it. But football (soccer) would always be my prefered sport.

The interest in the GAA games has been growing in Ireland and they've got a great 80,000 seater staduim that they fill for the semi's and finals of the All Ireland for both Football and Hurling. its played on the TV here too and is pretty big but Ireland is a small population so its amature (i think? at least my cousin played for Fermanagh, never asked him if he got payed? but its certainly not a full time job for his team.)

After the World Cup was hosted here in the States, Football (soccer) still had not overall increase in rating and fan base. Those that enjoy it and the new fans that jump on have been quite small.

Football (soccer) was probably at it's peak in the early 70's here in the States & seemed to have died out overthe years, especially with the addition of arena Football (soccer)....now that is just one lame ass game to watch IMHO.

The World Cup will most likely be aired on ESPN2 here in the States at some ungodly hour that will give little exposure to the sport. Unfortunately ESPN sucks when it comes to this, as they would rather air Hunting/Fishing shows along with Tennis re-runs of past tournaments, than air the Football (soccer) World Cup. Well at least they did in the past.

I personally prefer the Rugby World Cup!

It will only happen if America does good this worldcup.. then you'll have another sport to excel in, same as Woods made golf big over there. IF the American team manages to reach quarter finals or something you might see an increase.

Golf has always been big here. I personally did not see any changes with Woods. So many before him such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicholas, Gary Player, Payne Stewart, Tom Watson & Ben Crenshaw to name a few. I must be getting old, as I actually watch alot of Golf as well as play when I get the free time and the tee-off's at the clubs I like. Perhaps it has brought more of a cultural diversity for the game, opening it up to all minorities? Similar as to what Venus & Serena have done in opening the door for Tennis to inner city children?

That's kinda what I meant, when I was in Canada I saw kids just coming in of the streets, hiring a club buying some balls, hit them on the driving and be gone again. Over here golf is still seen as an elite sport, Woods opened it up more towards the less wealthy and elite sort of speak. I know golf has always been big there, but since Woods, I believe, More inner city people and kids started playing.

Over here it's still mostly viewed as an elite sport tho. But he, I like it so I play it
