The landing safely part was for a Bridge too Far.

If you recall, in the Longest Day, they sprint up the beach without losing a man.

In SPR, they pretty much crawl up the beach as arduously as possible, while mortar fire hits around them, and machine gun fire mows down every other man.

The only unrealistic thing about it is the fact that they sent an 8 man squad to go find a Private. That would never have happened.

Total Allied casualties on D-Day are estimated at 10,000, including 2500 dead. British casualties on D-Day have been estimated at approximately 2700. The Canadians lost 946 casualties. The US forces lost 6603 men.


That includes, MIA, KIA and WIA. And some of the MIA's might have just landed in the wrong spots and rejoined their units later on in the battle for normandy. So only 2500 dead.



The breakdown of US casualties was 1465 dead, 3184 wounded, 1928 missing and 26 captured. Of the total US figure, 2499 casualties were from the US airborne troops (238 of them being deaths). The casualties at Utah Beach were relatively light: 197, including 60 missing. However, the US 1st and 29th Divisions together suffered around 2000 casualties at Omaha Beach.


The total German casualties on D-Day are not known, but are estimated as being between 4000 and 9000 men.

There were more Casualties taken at Dieppe than there were on Omaha Beach. And in fact the Higher powers expected many more casualties than were actually recieved. I'm not saying it wasn't a bad place to be. But It was not so close as to what Speilberg made it out to be. I'm not saying you can't like the movie (your opinion), I myself don't actually mind it. But it really didn't deliver in the war dept. for me. Not with the likes of Band of Brothers to contest with.

Of course they can't kill the main persons at the landing, and those are the ones you mostly see, now it's been a while since I last saw the longest day, and I have seen all 3 off those more then once, so I could be messing those up through each other, but I thought the longest day landing was pretty realistic.

No, it was definatly too much Hollywood. But you're such a typical American you wouldn't notice anyway. It's a ridicilous movie.

hmm its a strange movie, read it on imdb before downloading would be my advice
