Having lived in northern Florida for 17 years and spent a fair amount of time in Georgia/Alabama/Mississippi, I can say that yes what you're saying is for the most part true. You can't necessarily categorize all police officers in the South as conservative redneck bumpkins, yet there are a fair amount of them (received a ticket or two from them myself). If you don't fit in with their predisposition of a Southerner, chances are they won't necessarily fuck with you but they'll probably hassle you a bit more.

it depends on what parts you're in. And it isn't so much an alternative appearance of the people that will get them to go over their limits. If the cop in question is young, and if you and your friend are young, the best things you can do is expect it, and prepare for it.

It isn't fair, but life isn't exactly fair.

Think of these kinds of situations like gambling. You can't always win, and you can't ever really predict the outcome of these things.

The only thing you can ever do, and should do, is try to put as many of the odds as you can in your favor.

Heh, I got the lucky end of the deal where I live. Shreveport-Bossier is (as you see) now referred to as one bigass city, seperated by the Red River. Shreveport is generally considered the "northern" half, and Bossier the "southern" half - not because of geography, but because of the people.

Anyways, Shreveport cops are corrupt as fuck. In the past few months I've been running with the Russian kid who's dad gets me out of all my tickets. (This Russian kid travels with a few pistols in his car. He's seriously insane).

But Bossier, fuck. When you cross the Huey P. Long bridge, you slow your ass down and use your turn signals and check your mirrors, because the Bossier cops get paid alot more, and the high-ups tend to not punish the officers if they had to go an extra step to get compliance from someone they pulled over.

In most cases, it's luck of the draw, but yeah- I'd say that an "alternative" (though nowadays, are they really that alternative? I find preps the minority at my school) look will probably get you more suspicious looks. But in some cases, they are justified - for instance, down in Ruston, all the shady looking kids are, in fact, shady. They get busted all the time down there.

This was not racist...but falls along the line of the mentally retarded cops from Hampton, VA:

1985 Hampton, VA: Spent an evening in lockup after a Grateful Dead Concert. We where busted for absolutely nothing except that they did not like our kind (Yanks) coming to their town & could hold us for 24 hrs. on the idea that we had knowledge of people who sold and or where taking drugs. Well that would have been 99% of the people who attended that concert! We where clean luckily.

Prior to our getting busted, I watched in amazement as they where pulling over anyone with license plates north of the Mason-Dixon. Actually witnessed them breaking headlights on cars, so that they could fine these kids & hold them.

Well at least the holding cells where full of us northern folk...and the one thing that sticks out in my head is that they asked all of us indivdualy if our parents where lawyers or held any political seat. I guess they could try and blackmail us if they where.

So...to sum it up....the Civil War is not over in Hampton, VA...at least it wasn't back in 1985! WOuld never visit that dive town again nor do I wish to drive in the state of VA. Except the outside areas of D.C.
