  • No Smoking Law in New Jersey

Not that I care if this law was passed or not, but regardless of what country your from, the law basically bans all cig smoking everywhere in the State of New Jersey, except for inside any CASINO in the state.

Hmmm....a double standard in the law? casino workers have some of the highest health problems and cancer rates (security guards and care dealers...and such). The law was passed in an effort to insure the health and safety of individuals in a working environment...hmmmm...unless you work for a Casino?

The Restaurant owners across NJ went to the States Courts to call for this as either all of NJ is non-smoking or the bill should be dismissed from law. It is theoretically illegal in the means of how this was passed and has private interest stamped all over it.

The Judge at the hearing had his decision made prior to the hearing it has been said and it just seems that the Govt. is on the take on this issue. Like nobody else would have come to that conclusion. It just strikes me that such a thing as this can be overlooked or should I say ignored.

Hypocrisy in the Govt. again. at another level of greed and ignorance.
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

The laws have been very similar in Ontario for a couple years now. For a while you were able to smoke inside bars and restaurants in a seperate ventilated smoking area but now that's not the case anymore, and restaurant and bar owners who paid for these smoking rooms will not be reimbersed for their investment...

They have no smoking laws in Columbus too. I think you have to be like 10 feet away from any public building in order to be able to smoke. Of course this puts you in like the middle of the road, haha.

      Meh, smoking is gross anyway.

But the question here is why allow the casino's? Why should they be able to be exempt from a State law such as this?

because casino's pay more money to the government than any other establishment. So they don't have to. Whether that's right or wrong isn't the question.

It's no worse than sitting in rush hour traffic, or just waiting for the bus outside in traffic. If it truly is for health reasons, they should make it illegal to drive a car that gets any less than 30 MPG and/or make more emissions restrictions. But that will never happen, because people need their Hummers and SUVs, they've got soccer practice to drive to.

Riesen...you hit on another subject of debate...the f'n SUV!!!!

What's the point? I still do not get the reasons for people to have these. To live in a non mountain area with good weather almost 90% of the time...why would people require such a vehicle?

The excuses for delaying and not making cars more fuel efficient is one big smoke screen. Back in the late 70's, cars where getting much better mileage than they do now. As for SUV's like the Escalade,Tahoe and Hummer....personally I dislike them and feel that if you drive one of these you should also have a new classification on your drivers license to where you would be required to take a test like they do for school buses and tractor trailers. But when the Govt. gives you a tax rebate for buying these GM crap SUV's. As the consumer you made out on the deal after the sale.....uhg! Govt gives a tax rebate and incentive to buy these gas guzzlers, yet they want people to be more fuel savy when they purchase a car?

Gas companies making excuses for rising costs, yet the CEO of Mobil made 51 million a year and just retired and got a retirement bonus of $400 million.

Ok...so who is blowing who at GM or is it someone from GM doing it to the Govt.? Or is the Oil Companies mixed into this too?

It's Friday...my usual time to rant. Sorry!

You do realize the costs of producing gasoline have also gone up dramatically?
When it takes more money to manufacture something it's going to cost more.
Example: If it once took 10 million dollars to produce 20 million barrels, and it was a dollar a barrel, they would make about 10 million in profits. The price of production rises to, oh say, 50 million for 20 million barrels. To make the SAME profit, they would have to charge 3 dollars a barrel.
I'm not trying to say there's no corruption in the Oil industry, (Hi OPEC) but there's always two sides to it, the media only seems to want to show one.

This is totally obvious, but when you consider the the breakthroughs in technology that allow the companies to decrease their workforce for automated machinery, it makes one wonder. Or has technology moved us backwards? I may be mistaken, but technology in the market place and manufacturing sectors was supposed to make goods available at cheaper or should I say, more economical friendly in pricing. I guess we need to replace technology with people power again and say f' the machines!

But on the flip side, my company deals with a petroleum based product, so I am well aware of costs for raw materials & the impact on prices. Yet as a material supplier of a pertoleum base product, my suppliers have all made mention that the shortage and price increases are not solely due to oil costs, but the industrial revolution taking place in China at this time, as never in history has one countries consumption and need for raw material such as oil, steel, concrete, polyester resins and fiberglass cloth matte basically quite alot of building/contruction materials, of which are in a shortage world wide, due to incresed demand with not enough product to please everyone.

I just find it funny when newspaper headlines read "Record Profits for such-and-such Oil Company" but never show how much time, money, and man power it took to produce the oil that they sold. If they took a second glance it would be easier to see that these Astronomical Profits aren't half as high as some people would have us believe.

That's how it is in New York... Though the casino situation is different, 'cause the casino's here all Native American reservation casino's, where it's technically not in New York, so the smoking ban doesn't concern them.

404, do you mean everywhere as in inside public places, or like sidewalks, too?

It's just a health concern, for non-smokers. Especially since second-hand smoking is worse for them, because their body is not use to the smoke so the body can't handle it as well as a smoker.

It's not that big of a deal, in my opinion. Like in bars, you just go outside to smoke... Though it sucks in the winter 'cause it's cold outside.

                        True,

but it seems you rule out that the need for oil has tripled in the past decade with the greatest consumption of raw materials being purchased up from China.

The car thing would upset me, a lot. I think that's pushing it, especially with rights and what not, because granted you're on the public roadways, it's your car.

I think one thing that could deal with is much like the Cell phone laws, where you cannot talk on a cell phone while driving (though passengers could smoke, and not be driving) it could distract the driver. But, that's pretty fucked if you can't smoke in cars.

Just another reason prices have shot up- It's perfectly reasonable that gasoline is this expensive. The majority of people complaining are either ignorant or want a scapegoat, in my opinion.

Why should people get SUV's? cause people like them. If you are going to afford an SUV you can afford the gas, so who cares? If i want a car i want the one that is right for me, not just because one is fuel efficient. Also the reason why everything cost so damn much is because the company wants to make money. There is no easy way to go around this situation, you're always going to need gas (unless u drive 1 of those sissy cars) so just deal with it. I know its outrageous but you can't do anything about it.
                              the price is right, bitch.
