If I would ever go to church, I sure as hell ain't dressing up for it.. I dress how I dress.. and that's it.

Then again, it's not like I think church is important or anything.
Maybe God was the first suicide bomber and the Big Bang was his moment of Glory.

I guess it varies from church to church. At first I'd say that all the black people I know along with myself, have to dress up nicely everytime you go to church, but one of my white friend's family also dresses up nice everytime they go.

Like Hero and Ratty said, it's a sign of respect. Not saying that you are a fucktard if your church allows you to dress casual, but you will look out of place in some churches if you walk in with jeans and a t-shirt on.
My father in law was telling me over Thanksgiving about this amazing bartender at some bar he frequented who could shake a martini and fill it to the rim with no leftovers and he thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen. I then proceeded to his home bar and made four martinis in one shaker with unfamiliar glassware and a non standard shaker and did the same thing. From that moment forward I knew he had no compunction about my cock ever being in his daughter's mouth.

The last time I was at church the priests made me pull down my pants. Why would I bother putting nice ones on?

You do not need to go to church to be religious, but a religion may require its members to go to church.

When did dress codes come into play at church? Was it in the 1900's, 1800's, 1700's? or was it just after Jesus died for the so called sins of everyone. Well it was a sin for him to wear that loin cloth on the cross....you'd think that someone would have given him more to wear!

Did they have nice suits and dresses to wear for church back in the 11th, 12th & 13th centuries? Hmmmm.....

Well if I was Saint Peter and I saw or had known that someone wore a tie dye to church or perhaps a sports bra for the women’s side, I would have to think twice if they should be admitted to heaven for such behavior.

In fact it should only be black tie for church services and all women should wear dresses below the knee and nothing showing cleavage or shoulders....strapless tops are a sin and will send you to hell!

As for dressing at a funeral, this would depend. In N.O.L.A., a funeral is looked at as a party of life and not a depressing event. It is rather a celebration of whomever passed and dress codes are not a part of it. Respect at a funeral is one thing, but going to church on a Sunday is not that same.

As a friend in the car business told me once, "the customer that comes in looking for a car in tattered jeans and shirt will most likely purchase & be able to afford the BMW, over the pristine dressed business man who is just window shopping." He sells more top line cars to the slob.,.....yet one would think that the suit and tie man would be the person buying. being a car for the wealthy....would one have to dress up to purchase such a car?

Don't judge one by the means of how they dress.

I agree that you should not be dressed in rags and have head lice at church sneezing on the head of the man or woman sitting in front of you, but if you go by the so called dress code, Mother Theresa would not have even be welcomed to most churches.
May your shit come to life and kiss you on the face.

I usually wear what I wear everyday to work or any other place. I wear casual pants and a button shirt. I don't think there is a dress code as to what's acceptable, in the Christian church.

There are rules in Islam though, in which a female has to be completely covered, and a man has to cover from just above his ankles, and cover his chest. One is not allowed to show his stomach area while at prayer.

I think what the people mean by having a dress code is that you have to wear clothing that won't distract other members of the church, although I find that really dumb, because at the church I attend, kids come in with mohawks and other stuff, and no one cares about the clothing. They all come for one purpose, and that is to learn more about their religion and worship their Lord Jesus Christ.

Pastors and Ministers guide it's members, but by no means do they tell you what to do. How you live your life is completely up to you, but if your Christian, you basically live by the Holy Spirit and it's fruits. (Galatians 5:16-25)

So to give my answer to the topic, you don't necessarly have to go to church to be religious, but the Apostle Paul did advice fellowship between members of the same body of Christ. In the end, it's up to the person, but I think that a large majority of Christians attend church because they want to, not because anyone makes them.

I personally attend because I like it.

I know I made this into a Christian issue, because I, myself am Christian and this is what I feel.

PS: this is the reason I don't have a specific denomination.

                    Thanks for reading.

I just remembered that technically anytime you get together with another person, it can be considered churchy. (Matthew 18:20)
