I dunno .... but, I never had a hard drive crash on me, in all my years, to the point where I had to get a new one.

i actually specialize in recovery of data (from damaged HDDs\dvds\cds)

the cds and dvds are ez (depending on level of damage, some are hammered beyond repair)

as for hdds i use a prog called BART P.E. . i made several add ons and plug ins for it that you wont find anywhere but my comp so if you aquire BART PE PM me and ill email you the plugins.

BART PE is a program that runs a windows shell from your CD ROM. so basiclly you can use an 80% functional version of windows straight from memory\cd. you dont even need an hdd plugged in at all, just boot from the BART cd. this is also a good tool for diagnostics. check it out, lemme know what you think, and if you think it looks cool, ask me for my plugins and youll flip on how well it works.

or just postal mail me your hdd and 600$ and ill do it up for ya

btw feel free to thank me for giving away my secrets lol, <3 TW
Ill-timed force will be ineffective; act with precision; timing is everything. Knowing where and when to strike is more important than strength; misapplied ability is disability. Unreasonable or undue force will defeat itself

Yes, there's recovery software but that's only good if some sectors are bad corrupting the HD. If there's physical damage or the disk doesn't even spin up you're screwed.

        I bought a 250G Seagate and an enclosure ($94+$35).

You can get an 80G for $50.

You can backup to DVDs or CDs too. I have movies, TV shows I wanted to backup so I went for the HD backup rather than upgrading to a DVD burner.

If you have multiple computers you could put stuff you don't want to lose on both computers. Chances are they won't die at the same time.

the stoner guy is right, BART PE is mega-useful for errors that stop short of physically breaking your HD

Its very easy to use tho, always better than having no backup i suppose. It's worth paying more for a better one though, mine's made by buffallo, i wouldnt buy from them again. Try Lacie perhaps.
wasn't that the one from ebay?

I bought an exertnal hard drive last year mainly because my laptop hard drive is only 30 gigs and I don't have a PC. My roommate suggested buying a HD and then the converter kit but I'm stupid and probably would fuck it up so I bought 200 gig HD off ebay for about $110.
