Actually, they start out with 4.0 and the school merely detracts from that if they get detention or something.

I got a 27 in the ACT and I'm finishing my third year at DePaul. I'd say the most important thing you can get out of your education is learning real life skills rather than getting a high GPA. Just a word of advice.

I got a 28 on the ACT.

I also took the SAT, before they added the writing, and got a 1520. Then I took the SAT with the writing, and got a 1720. Sigh.

Anyways, I could have gone to UW, Johns Hopkins, Duke, and St. Johns U, but I chose to stay in state instead. Also, I got into Syracuse film school (second to Columbia) and the New York Film Institute, but I'm choosing not to go to film school, and fuck myself over for life.

I ask this to you, Benno and Zeus (if either of them also catch this)- how does it feel to be out of college? You said the college you went to doesn't weigh a whole lot, but are you going, or about to go through any major location changes? Moving cross country, away from home, or out of state?

I just ask because I should be graduating in December, so I thought I'd get a heads up. Oh one more thing- does collge feel like just as big of a waste as highschool did, or did you actually get more out of college than highschool?

Your choice of college matters for certain professions, but for some, such as more creative fields, it matters very little. If the person you're interviewing with is an HR flunky who doesn't know anything about the position hes trying to find a match for, a school with a nice name would probably help, but if you're showing your portfolio to somebody who actually works/has worked in your chosen industry, it doesn't really.

I think the biggest difference between college and high school is motivation. In HS, the reason anybody studied or did any work was to acquire good grades so they could get into a good college. Work so you can earn the privilege to do more work? That doesn't sound like the tastiest carrot to have hanging on the end of the stick. Even if it is a step towards your goal, studying just so you can pass a specific test completely bastardizes what an education is about anyways.

Anyways, the only difference I feel being done with school is having free time that isn't overshadowed by other responsibilities. I don't have to take my work home with me; in fact it's highly discouraged to do so since they don't want us to get burned out. It might be a mistake, but I still live in the same city I went to school in so that's all the same.

Guys that go to film school outta high school either end up as some big director's bitch, or a director of porn. I want neither, and I wish not to be poor, so I'm going to get a degree first and do film school second.

I always thought composite scores were bullshit, but I was in straight up disbelief when they added an essay section. That absolutely cannot be graded objectively nor uniformly, and I think they should take the "S" out of SAT in shame.

First time on the SAT, I came out with 780 math and 740 verbal, for a total 1520/1600. I didn't go for a second time. Graduated HS with a 4.3ish GPA. Just finished my 3rd year of college, currently holding a 3.99 GPA. Yeah.. I got an A- in a stupid GE (general education) class.

To people wondering about where you go to college mattering.. I got accepted to every college I applied to (UC Berkeley, Davis, Santa Cruz; San Jose State, Cal Poly SLO, and Sonoma State), and decided to go to Sonoma State because I liked the pretty trees. I'm working for Apple right now.

It doesn't matter what you know or where you go.. it's all about WHO you know. Seriously. Make contacts. It's easier to make useful contacts at a prestigious school, because you're surrounded by other ambitious people, but that's about as far as location matters. Imho.
