  • ITT you recommend a Linux distro

Looking for something minimalist that can run openoffice, and can play basic media files. Surf the net. That's about it.

Again, I would appreciate this not being moved to tech support, since nobody ever checks that folder anyway. Thanks.

      Throughout time, there’s been
      crimes, throughout our history
But not as great, as the one of late, affecting you and me
Once a nation proud and free, and now we’re weeping sorrow’s tears
Tragedy’s approaching, it’s worse than all your fears

      Come on my countrymen
Come on and take a stand
Don’t let ‘em take away your land

Suse is good for what you listed, ubuntu is pretty popular but I haven't used it yet. If you want just a CD boot KNOPPIX is good.

I have the UBuntu live CD. Just stick it in, it comes with Firefox and Open Office loaded on it, everything's already on the CD. There's a bunch of other stuff like GIMP and other programs that I don't know how to use.

Ubuntu is certainly the easiest to pick up. After literally spending three days installing gentoo I punted and went with Fedora, although I hear gentoo has a graphical installer now.

Ok, I tried downloading Knoppix, but for some reason the 4.0gb .iso only dl'ds to 2.0gb. Then the transfer quits. I tried it twice, and got the same problem.

So, after wasting a few hours, I just went to Fry's and bought a $9 linux magazine that came with the new Fedora5 distro DVD, and some other stuff bundled in. And I had to get batteries and Liberty City Stories anyway.

I know, I could have saved the money, but the $9 was worth avoiding any more hassle.

If you want something easy, Mandriva is a decent starter distro. It's a 3 disc download, I think. Then again, it's not exactly the most minimalist distro. But it is a good Windows replacement. That's what I'm going to dual-boot with when I get a bigger hard drive.
